Is it me or does it not seem pointless having five news written on the ground floor and a "shop sign" style Five on the upper floor, surely when they're using shots like the one above they wouldn't need two fives?

Didn't they have that stuff on the outside doors to the showers on Big Brother last year?

Today's Guardian G2 had a spread on the Five News relaunch and a huge picture of Kirsty in the new set

That looks like a stills photo rather than a camera shot though - no guarantee a director will use that shot with two "fives" on-air, neither is there a guarantee that the projectors behind Kirsty will have that "five" imagery in it on-air. (It might have been put there for the photo shoot?)

The stills shoot may have taken place earlier during piloting - and may not be indicative of how things look on-air. Given that it looks as if five news will be 16:9 I'd be really surprised if that WAS a screengrab.

Yep - think so. It is also used in "posh" clothes shop changing rooms, and in some offices to turn a "bubble" office into a private area.

Not particularly new technology - though the use of it with projectors is less common. I assume that the screen becoming semi-opaque (if quite "grey" - meaning washed out blacks if used for "real" pictures) has advantages over holo-screens, as you can be more creative and flexible with the set behind the screen.

If such a shop suffered a power-cut, would the glass go clear allowing all and sundry to see you changing? Smile

Nope - on = transparent, off = opaque

Nice idea though!

I'm sure there would be some kind of backup. Anyway, if the shop did suffer a powercut, they would have a backup generator i'd expect. Smile

Nasty looking hotspot from the projector behind though - and also very visible in the wide shot on the last page.

If they have to shoot off-centre to avoid it, won't we end up with washed out looking images?
