It was a thing where they e-mailed a load of BBC News presenters to see if they'd do Newsbeat. Fiona Bruce evidently replied (and was apparently the only one to do so apart from Nicholas Witchell, but he was too late) and did the news this afternoon.
Really interesting to hear her do it - she sounds so out of place with her reading style, especailly over that funky rockin' beatdroppin' bed. But good on her to give it a go!

Why exactly would a television presenter reading a news bulletin on radio 1 be an 'injoke?' Chris Rogers does it. I suppose it was a high profile presenter though.
Err., because we are talking about Newsbeat here, not Radio 2, 4 or Five Live.
It turns out it was a in-joke, She only did the 4.30pm bulletin and Scott Mills didn't know about it until she'd started. The regular presenter was back at 5pm.
If you want to listen to Fiona and the explaination of why she did it, listen again at bbc.co.uk/radio1 and click on Scott Mills and fast forward 30 mins

I heard this, wasn't it JK and Joel abusing the BBC in-house E-Mail system for this reason. They were going on about how they were e-mailing the Weather presenters the other week and I'm certain they said Rob McElwee replied.
I'm surprised to hear that Nicholas Witchell would be up for such a thing, he seems to come across as a boring old fart these days.

Newsbeat have a reporting position in the TVC Newsroom. She was proably talking from there. Newsbeat is based with the rest of Radio 1 in Yalding House in Central London

Just had a listen - interesting to hear that. I guess Fiona is at Television Centre and Radio 1 is down the road a bit and its done via Satellite or ISDN or something? Sounds good when she said she was 2 minutes away from the 10pm desk!
