Easily 1999. It was a revolutionary design which was clean and professional but it also had colour and was interesting to look at. The 2003 set was just way to much fluorescent white perspex and the current one is very, very drab which almost completely lacks colour aside from a hint of red in the background image and the desk.

Yes I agree but I think 2003 was also good compared to what we have now.

Yes I agree but I think 2003 was also good compared to what we have now.

Just the basic general set of 1999-2003 I supose if I included every slight change in every set the poll would be about 10 options long
I must say 1999 looked more solid than the 2003 on which kind of looked like it was made from plastic.

For quality of shots and eyelines the 1998 version and the first version of the 1999 version were probably the best. (I particularly like the 1998 soft set)
The second version of the 1999 set (when the plasmas with the live gallery shot were introduced) wasn't quite as good as they parallel rather than cross-shot the presenters - giving lots of scope for jump cuts.
The 2003 set had horrible guest eyelines... Easily my least favourite from a shot point of view. I also found the big screen interview area very cramped - the second desk in the 1999 era, and the sofa in the 1998 era were both much better for discussions etc.

You have just said exactley what I was going to say 
I liked the 1998 sofa as it was great for the in depth stuff and if a modern version was brought in it would be great for film 24 and e24/QT extra. I have heard that the second desk in N8 in 1999 was origionally there for the overnights but eventually became a discussion area.
Have the NC been working on trying to make the backdrop look better because its it me or has there been more "monitors" appearing to be switched on in that fake newsroom over the last week. I think N6 would be much better for the NC if they had totally gutted it and build a proper set for them insted of just putting a new desk into the same studio that already stood a lot more work should have gone on.

and how exactly would have that done the main purpose of the exercise, which was saving money. although I think you've been informed of this over and over and yet every week without fail you go "oh i think the news channel would look better if [insert daft suggestion]"
