P.S. Neither Mark or Mary does ENE tonight. Felicity stood in for Mary on the EN, but Steve Scott is doing the Extra programme!

At the end of last night's programme, Mark said that Nicholas Owen would be presenting ENE tonight.

Instead of Evening News Extra on the NC why don't ITV do extra news on ITV1. For the past couple of weeks the show has finished by 6.55pm and that includes the regional news update.

I was under the impression that ITV had to run at least a half hour of high-quality national and international news (which in commercial TV presumably means 26/27 minutes) and they are not meeting that requirement at the moment. (I'm talking about the minutage not the high-quality aspect of this remit. They haven't fulfilled that requirement for year IMO).

Didn't see you posting when the late ITV News was extended way past 11pm whenever there is a story worthy of it, or when the Sunday evening ITV News was extended from 15 to 20 minutes.

Obviously I didn't post then because it has nothing to do with my point, which is about primetime (6.00-10.30), regular programming (not specials) and the ITV Evening News and not a weekend bulletin.

Well, a 30 minute programme can contain up to 7 minutes of adverts, plus trailers, so only needs to be 22-23 minutes in length.

And remember now that generally the Evening News doesn't have a break mid-programming, so finishing at 6.55 is equivalent to finishing a couple of minutes later with an internal break!

I don't think OFCOM are terribly fussy on the length of each programme as long as it balances itself out over the week - so the length of the EN generally depends on what time Emmerdale begins, which is usually later on Tuesdays and Thursdays when EastEnders is on!

P.S. Neither Mark or Mary does ENE tonight. Felicity stood in for Mary on the EN, but Steve Scott is doing the Extra programme!

According to Ofcom there can only be 7 minutes per HOUR not half-hour:
"The total amount of advertising in any one day must not exceed an average of seven minutes per hour of broadcasting. In the periods 6pm – 11pm and 7am – 9am the total amount of advertising must not, without the Commission's prior permission, exceed an average of eight minutes an hour on any one day.

Isn't that why ITV chooses not to show any ads overnight, so they can show more per hour during the day?

Afraid your talking to someone who looked into this a while back.

Though it's an AVERAGE of 7 minutes an hour, the actual maximum per hour is 12 minutes - hence why ITV will have no ads around the news and regional programmes so they can pack more around Corrie and Emmerdale. The maximum length of an ad break is 3.5minute (+20 sec trailer).

In peak time 6-11pm, ITV can have 40 minutes of ads - and screen most of these between 6.55 and 10.30pm - though the break in the regional news seems to be a regular fixture now!

And even at 7 minutes an hour, they can still have 7 mins of ads around the Evening News if they have none around the Regional News!

I stand corrected Brekkie Boy. Still it just shows you what a pack of cheats / liars ITV are when they talk about their half-hour news. And that's going back to the days of News At Tden. I guess its similar as the way C4 used to talk about their hour-long news when in fact C4 news was 50 minutes long, with a 10-minute Comment afterwards.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Yes, the 6pm news hour has been 56 minutes (or so) of ad-free news until recently, but ITV have been under no obligation to maintain that state of affairs indefinitely.

Why do people get so worked up about a few ads before/after/during a news bulletin? It's those ads that are paying for the news service. Seems reasonable to me.

Kennedy, your preconceived, prejudice opinions of ITV are completely ridiculous and rather irritating.

Yes this is a place to post opinions etc, however your constant bashing of ITV as if it spawns from the devil, criticising it in every possible way is just pathetic.

ITV are great at what they do, and you seem to pull a negative out of everything. I'm sure I could do just the same with greater ease with your preferred channel.

Has Mary hosted ENE everynight this week with Mark being on location?

The ad break in the regional news was only a temporary thing to recoup some of the cash lost by dropping loads of breaks around 7/7.
