NBC does not have a history of playing its cards right though when it comes to Europe. They never really knew what to do with Super Channel and eventually closed it down. More recently witness the death by a thousand cuts CNBC Europe has undergone since NBC fully took it over - Squawk Box Europe aside there is little of the European channel left, it’s just a relay of CNBC US now.

CNBC I don’t think is under NBC News proper.

Keep in mind NBC News is still minority shareholder in EuroNews. They could have been brought on for all the US content they provide but also to revitalize the channel. Maybe modernize it without rocking the boat.

Now could you see NBC Nightly News or very serious special reports carried on EuroNews? Perfect for expats and bring in new eyeballs.

I'm rather unsure as to what gap in the market this is targeting. What does "success" look like for Euronews? It's not going to have the international profile of a CNN or a BBC.

I think that the "European" character of Euronews, in contrast to the broader, "global" focus of CNNI or BBC World News, is the channel's biggest potential advantage. Europe is more united than ever; what happens in one country can directly affect people across the continent. Millions of people live in countries other than their own, and particularly the younger generations tend to have a strongly pan-European mindset -- yet the national mainstream media often fail to reflect this.

While there are plenty of channels providing news at the national and the global levels, I believe there is a long-term niche for a strong pan-European player, and if NBC plays its cards right, it could dominate thus field for years to come.

If their marketing department is right, Euronews is the "most watched" news channel in Europe. I think that's based on total availability in number of households and not on actual viewership. But with that big of a footprint, there's plenty of room to grow.

A lot of the criticism of Euronews, especially on here, was always that it was a stale, emotionless newswheel channel with much of the content dubbed for most of the audience. Now that they've split off into 12 truly independent channels, they are now able to cater each language service to their unique audiences. Euronews now has more enterprise reporting, its own correspondents, anchors, and newscasts, making it look and act like any other news channel with quality content. Those are all much stronger reasons to get people to tune in than before. I could see how Euronews could make a dent, especially in a lot of non-Anglophone markets where international news channels are few and far between.

The NBC thing is interesting, but I wonder how much of it is more of just a super-charged content sharing agreement. So far, that's mostly all that it appears to be.

Good move. Hope they simulcast Today Show and NBC Nightly News soon.

I don't think that would be a good idea, though the English channel has been running reports from Nightly News and NBC's affiliate service for several months now.

NBC Nightly News should be ok, but Today would be well off target for a channel that presents news with a European perspective.

I'm surprised they've gone for 'Good Morning Europe' rather than 'Europe Today', given the obvious NBC synergies the latter would create. Europe Today was actually the name for the breakfast show on CNBC Europe after it merged with EBN in the 90s.

If NBC Nightly News was to be shown on the other language services, it'd almost certainly need to be recorded to schedule later to all for the bulletin to dubbed into French and German.

How about Noticiero Telemundo on their Spanish service.

NBC Nightly News already goes out on CNBC, I can't see any benefit in moving it to Euronews.

And let's be realistic, Today isn't going to be simulcast. If anything gets simulcast it would be MSNBC's primetime stuff overnight.

I hadn't even thought of that. Is the Spanish channel running any content from Telemundo? I've never seen anything to suggest that Telemundo is part of the content sharing, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that it isn't. It is all the same parent company, give or take.

I've only been watching the English and French channels. When it's time to run stories from the U.S., the English channel slips the NBC reports into the newswheel format while the French edition still compiles its own story — it doesn't dub the NBC reports.

As mentioned in the Sky News Presenters thread, Darren McCaffrey will become the Political Editor and will present a show from Brussels.

It also confirmed that Euronews English will relaunch in September in Darren's tweet.

This is a softlaunch though and a show that doesn't really live up to the Today brand. They might save that for a bigger effort down the line.
