Don't be silly. It's a valid point. Indeed, maybe in the future, we will all have large green snails heads in place of nipples.

Marcus Brigstocke on The Late Edition has been spot on tonight, ridiculing those who sent emails and texts to News 24 this morning.

Did they include the text that Simon McCoy read out on News24 this morning, just after 8:30am I think? To paraphrase, "I felt the earthquake early this morning, my wife didn't feel a thing - as usual". It made myself and Simon McCoy laigh anyway.

Simon had that telling smile on his face, I knew he was going to read out one along those lines Laughing

Lol, and I laughed at the one from the bloke whose wife thought he'd broken wind and proceeded to punch him in the ribs!

I think the people downplaying this earthquake are the ones who need to get a grip. A few points:

1) It may have been a fairly small earthquake in global terms but for the UK it was the biggest one in 25 years. If someone from Japan or San Francisco was here, he/she would probably not even have realised the quake had happened - they're used to it. We are not and, as such, it came as quite a surprise, I can tell you (isn't it ironic that the majority of those members downplaying the earthquake didn't actually feel it? Hmmm....). There may not have been much damage or injury but it's still out of the ordinary for the UK.

2) I don't know how anyone can state that today has been a slow news day. While I was watching News 24 this morning, breaking news was coming in thick and fast - what about the protesters on the roof of Parliament?!

3) I suspect those members stating that the earthquake is not newsworthy have not stepped foot outside of their house all day. As Andrew rightly said, it has been the topic of conversation across the whole country today - every TV programme has mentioned it and practically everyone I've met or spoken to today have discussed it with me. If that isn't news, then I don't know what is.

I agree itsrobert - remember this isn't BBC World, these are programme for the UK. Of course, it's nothing compared to San Fran, Japan, or other places, but for the UK, this is a big story. Regerdless of the damage, people will want to know more. Perhaps the coverage has been a little obsessive, and I wouldn't used so much UCG, but it's an important story.

Yes, that's right. Fern Britton summed it up nicely this morning. She said it was a "typically British earthquake", i.e. nothing much happened but everyone's talking about it. Like it or not, this is the sort of story that makes people tune in to news bulletins. The broadcasters know that, hence why they've covered it so much today.

I haven't discussed it with anyone. Does that mean that I haven't stepped outside all day? No.

I just don't see the friggin point of all this coverage hinging on people who were stirred awake only to fall asleep again when they wondered what it was. Even the reporter on the scene this morning was asleep at the time and didn't have a clue what to say.

Nothing to say what caused it? Well, there wasn't on Breakfast. By God, it's a slow news day.

No I'm afraid I have to agree with the original poster. The coverage is far too much fuss over next to nothing. It's definitely newsworthy but to have blanket coverage (as per all Look North Breakfast bulletins) or to lead with this when, other than ten seconds of rumbling and one man who broke his pelvis, there's nothing more to say is over the top. Unless something else could be added, it should have dwindled down the newsorder, especially when something much more important like a security breach at the Commons happened.

It wasn't just in England. The aftershocks were felt in County Down.

Why does every news agency cry over a British earthquake when the aftermath is always a few piles of rubble the size of a sandcastle? Newswatch, stand by.

Oh so you expect them to ignore it then?

In reply this this post: No they might as well not ignore it, but for the love of God, they make it sound like we're living in San Francisco. Just calm down news agencies. Take three deep breathes, a glass of water, and religate it to the third story on the agenda.

Of course it was worthy. The problem was everyone (including BBC News) blew it completely out of proportion. As others have said you'd be forgiven for thinking we'd had a proper San Fran style quake. I suppose it's to be expected though. This is a country that comes to a standstill when we get a few inches of snow or rain. Rolling Eyes
