Felt it strongly here in York and the flats I lived in did shake, I thought it was a sudden powerful gust of wind but only just learning what it was.

Seemed to take N24 about 20 mins to flag it up, I guess that's one benefit of Sky's willingness to use viewer submitted info as a source.

"Some very graphic pictures coming into us at the moment..."

No, really? Followed by no pictures at all. Great work as usual, Sky.

Very graphic?! Gotta love the over-the-top reaction to this occurence - not only by news reporters, but also Joe Public. Heaven help how they would react if they lived in a country that suffered mass destruction when an earthquake struck.

File under: non-event.

Absolutely agree what media frenzy!

I tuned into SKY NEWS this morning to be greeted by the serious face of Mr Holmes saying 'If you've just joined us Britain is waking up to the aftermath of its strongest Earthquake in so many years'.

Eeek I thought casualties, destruction - it seemed like I was in an American Disaster Movie.

I was still in one piece, so was my house, I could hear cars going by.

Come on SKY tell me the news - no casualties thank goodness - a few bits of slate had fallen off an old church, someone’s roof had lost a few bricks, pictures of cracks developing in walls. Was this it?

Sensationalism gone mad!

No-one in my house felt it at all, yet by all accounts we should have done so! A reporter on Breakfast described it as "A very British earthquake" which seems absolutely spot on to me!

No doubt it'll be top story on a few regional news programmes this evening with pictures of 'structural damage' (i.e. fallen chimney pots) and stories of people being 'shaken from their beds' ! How we love a crisis!

Felt something here in West London - as if a very large lorry was going past. Very odd - chair was very wobbly. Thought it was an earthquake as it happened - and as I tried to go to the bgs site to check that kinds of confirmed it, as it was falling over under the strain of people trying to check.

Was surprised neither Sky nor News 24 went there - as it was a trivial task to get the seismographic data with a HUGE spike at just before 1am which would have been a good image to use...

Sky were well ahead of the game in reporting it - but did seem to loop the same three facts (epicentre, magnitude, felt all across the UK) in a very dull manner.

One of the very few pictures sent to The Chris Moyles show was one of a cup on it's side. Which I think sums it up perfectly. Laughing

The reported epicenter, 8kms E of Market Rasen puts it within a couple of miles of both Belmont and the Claxby radar head. I wonder if there was any damage to either? I think if you were working on Belmont at the time, it may be more than the earth that moved!

I was watching TV in bed, heard a rumble that last for about 5 seconds then the house shook for about 10. I e-mailed the BBC at approximately 1.05 and at 1.18 the woman presenting it said that they had reports of an earthquake. News 24 originally said 4.7 on the Richter Scale with the epicentre being Hull despite the breaking news bar saying Lincolnshire. Classic FM said the epicentre was Gainsborough but I guess with in a few hours all sources were agreed.

I knew it was an earthquake because I remember one a few years ago. Living about 60/70 miles from the epicentre what I experienced was around 5 on the richter scale. One aftershock has happened already but it was too small to physically detect, the maximum possible aftershock will be 4 on the Richter Scale, if it does happen it'll be today or tomorrow.
