Not bad - nice to have a change of presenter actually.

I think Lyse Doucet would be a great addition to the Newsnight Team - she would bring authority and knowledge to the programme. She has interviewed a range of world leaders, politicians, etc.

Not strictly related to Newsnight but, after having been able to watch a few hours of BBC World I think some of the presenters there would be brilliant on the main stream BBC News - the likes of Lyse Doucet and Adrian Finigan, rather than Twinkletoes and some of the other regional cast-offs we seem to be getting at the minute. (Thats a gibe at Emily if you haven't got it yet).
Maybe a mixture of World and National presenters would better suit.

As others have said - there are surely better people available, who have a bit more of that elusive "something" in their presentation and interview style.

Well there are far less suitable regional news presenters who it could have been... Peter Levy anyone?

YAY

"Tonight on Newsnight, we'll be talking to the movers and shakers of the political world...and Dickie Bird...

But first, we speak to the Prime Minister Tony Blair...

Mr Blair...you've just sanctioned the death of 1,000 Britons. This is a bit of embarrassment isn't it?"

*Insert further questions like "What next?" and "How will you make sure it won't happen again?".

Well I may be slated yet again - but I would have said Martha Kearney, Gavin Esler, Eddie Mair - indeed my namesake on this forum would have been better than Maitlis. Yet I do not know enough about Emily to form an educated opinion.

One thing I would say is - want a damn good career on TV news - join BBC LDN and you're laughing. Just look at Nina Hossain and Gillian Joseph. Asad next ?

Asad went down shurely, Ed.

He presented a Special edition of Inside Out and has other stuff in the pipeline.
There does seem to be a somewhat "interesting" bias for BBC London presenter - suppose it's the travel.

Last night's programme seemed better, but made me think that she really is more suited to Breakfast. The "sofa politics" segment included the banter and lightheartedness you're most likely to see in the morning, if twinkletoes isn't presenting.

Yes, Breakfast would be more her thing. I have to disagree thought about the rest of the programme. Utterly appauling. The Galloway interview was a joke - no literally. Those questions Isontine posted for the Levy programme must have been seized upon.
"Mr Gallow how do you feel?"
Then the sofa politics section. Now I could understand if this were on a light hearted, fluffy news programme - but Newnight?
I just hope that her breif stint on NN, chosen managment will not be repeated in a hurry.
Kirsty's back tonight popcies...

This seems to be very speculative, but it's quite interesting.

Anyway in responce to your question Pickle, I suppose its a case of opinion. I personally think she is inapproiate but I also think tea bag will be our saviour, so ulimatly it falls to opinion.

Your not a coffee drinker, are you?

The Kirsty story? Good on her! (Chessy, Americanised voice please)

Sorry Matrix but one can't help but think that you would agree entirely with Michael Buerk's sentiments expressed earlier this year.

I would like to put this simply. I am not a sexist. I just don't like Emily M.
I think there are far more qualified member of BBC News who could fill her shoes, even, and god forbid the evil female ones.

Sorry, if my message came across as Sexist, it was never intended to. Joel.
