Apparently, according to today's Times 2 Emily is to present Newsnight, for 2 editions next week, possibly being groomed to present full time.

Thoughts?

I am surprised. I don't think she has the confidence for news night, a normal BBC News Bulletin maybe, but then again, I dont watch Local News often, so perhaps she is better now...

The last time I saw her on TV was co-presenting a dreadful lottery show with Julian Clary... and now we're supposed to be able to take her seriously?

I can think of many people who are about 50 times more capable to present Newsnight.

"But she's a pretty blonde bird so let's stick her on, pull in the viewers that way."

How ridiculous - the woman is an airhead. Her interview technique has got no better since she left Sky. I think she's been taking tips from Peter Levy.

Not suitable for a heavyweight bulletin at all.

What is likely to happen:

Emily goes to Newsnight

Everybody who works on Newsnight think she is a thick bitch

Emily proves them right when she presents the show

Newsnight staff complain furiously

Emily becomes hate figure

Emily does not wish to go back to Newsnight

Problem solved

As for how this could happen, read only the sentence in the Times for an explanation: EXECUTIVES thought this was a good idea. Don't they always.

But why would she need to present "full time"? What's up with Jeremy and the others?

I just can't see it happening, to be honest.

Jeremy Paxman, Gavin Esler, Kirsty Wark all have plenty of life in them yet.

And let's not forget that Emily Maitlis is not remotely well-known outside of the M25.

It is all just the product of some meeting, where a group of execs sat down and thought 'hmm, what can we change today, then?' and they came up with the idea of putting a pretty, blonde nobody on Newsnight to make it more appealing to viewers.

I shall be bitterly disappointed if Paxman doesn't make a biting remark about her impending arrival.

I have to admit I was baffled when I read it. Are they trying to phase Kirsty out? Would be a shame as she is superb.

Maitlis was too light-weight when she presented Breakfast last year, so putting her on Newsnight is just Rolling Eyes

I agree, Emily was too light even for Breakfast. She would be all right for the entertainment section and regional news but over to Newsnight is a strange decision.
Besides is there any need for three presenters (which is the current state), let alone four, with a show that is only on 5 days a week?
If they move anyone it should be Fiona Bruce, who I think would be more use on Newsnight.
