The other possibility would be Nik Gowing appearing on the channel. He did appear in the opening countdown sequence of the channel, and is a very good presenter, so could be considered as a possible contender.

Sorry the idea of a heavy weigh does tend to suggest Huw, although I'm sure it'll come eventually, thats the announcement...dirty minds...

Personally think this could be quite good but I just hope to god there is some reconsideration of the on-screen pres, please, how much longer of the exploding globe? Just look at the countdown, a million times better!

We shall wait and see. Oh, out of interest, has a date been announced when these changes will take effect?

With Natasha evidently staying on the Six, Breakfast needs a more permanent solution. Dermot is almost certainly moving elsewhere I would think, probably Six or Ten. New pairing on Breakfast to accompany Bill/Sian would come naturally from Simon/Kate. Kate might be groomed as the new Mon-Thur face of Breakfast? Except jamej talked of two people moving, not a 'couple' moving, so I'm not sure!

Ian of Old - I really hope that you are wrong here.

Whatever the Beeb do, I hope they give Sian Williams a permanent AND significant slot, whether it be 'Breakfast' or the'Six'.

This is the woman who has been waiting on the sidelines for FAR TOO LONG!! I feel that substance over beauty is the way to go. I think Natasha's looks will go before Sian's brain!

Ah I should have been more clear. I absolutely hope I'm wrong as well. I dislike Kate in the same way I dislike Natasha. But the BBC likes the latter so probably likes the former.

And in all the speculation about the slots, we've missed out opinions on the press release. Mine, for what it's worth, is that this is a backward step. Haven't seen much of Maitlis, but Brown always seems a bit dull when he's done News 24 in the past. At the moment the Chris and Jane pairing is superb and in back half-hours is releaxed and entertaining. Can't really see Emily and Ben having the 'it' factor.

I am sorry for banging on about this, but I really would love to see a Scot hit the big time in London. Emily Maitlis, Gillian Joseph, Nina Hossain, Mary Nightingale, Lucy Alexander and Natasha Kaplinsky all have one thing in common - they are all from London regional news shows.

I do not know enough off Maitlis, but I would have preferred Eddie Mair or Martha Kearney alongside Wark, Paxman and Esler.

Ben Brown always seems a great correspondent, but yes - he does seem a bit dull in personality. I rather like the energy of the likes of Mark Easton and Evan Davies - at least they are fully charged and certainly switched on when it comes to news!

I also would love Louise and Jon to have a more prominent role within BBC News - but I have already banged on about that as well! Sorry!!

Gwennan Edwards, Mike Embley, Natasha Kaplinksy, Fiona Bruce have also presented the regional news programmes for London. Scots have hit the big time in the past, for example David Robertson, used to regularly present Breakfast News, and still sometimes crops up on Breakfast from News 24.

Fair enough London, but it would be nice to have a Scots presenter do well in the big smoke. It may be to do with the accent, as Kirsty Young and Wark have lost their accents sooner than I give up diets at New Year!

Although, I am always miffed that Eddie Mair has not done better on national TV news shows!

As it's such a poorly kept secret in TV Centre that is's bound to leak soon, I'll give you another clue. If my anorak memory is accurate, the new Evening male presenter on News24 was the third person ever to be seen live on the channel. The new signing that hasn't been named yet was (I think) either the fourth or fifth person to be seen live on the channel.

My guess as to why it hasn't been announced yet is that the person in question hasn't signed on the dotted line yet. Pure speculation though.

I know it's like closing the barn door after horse has bolted, as it has been announced by the BBC Press Office, but still... W12 is right in confirming that Ben Brown is the not only the new male anchor of th3 7-10 slot, but also the third person seen live on the channel after its launch. Take a look at this:

BBC News 24 at TV Home

If you look at the last picture on the page, it shows Ben Brown on screen talking to Sarah Montague. The clock in the corner, please note, reads 6.02

Moreover, it seems that Huw Edwards may well have been the fourth or fifth person seen live on the channel, as some people have pointed out on this forum. The pictures on this page show Huw in the News 24 studio at around 6.10 However, there is another person on the screen over Huw's shoulder and I can't quite make out who it is. But the new signing can't be Huw - he is already signed to the BBC. Anybody got any ideas as to who that person on the screen may be?

I presume by 'new signing' they mean to News Channel of the Year, sorry I meant News 24. Could the person on the screen be Bridget Kendal?

Eddie Mair would be fantastic, but I think he's up for the move to Today when John Humphreys leaves (I think later this year).

It's great to see someone like Ben Brown get a slot- he clearly knows his stuff and will bring new angles to analysis based discussions. If someone like this has put in a request to stay at home for personal reasons (e.g. family etc) rather than continue as a foreign correspondant, it's far better to use them on News 24 than reading out a script on BBC One.
