IIRC, one of my old schools had to be evacuated once because of a toaster setting off the fire alarm! The fire brigade turned up - and one of the firemen who was on duty and called out to the school just happened to be a part time member of staff at the school!

You'd have thought that there would be some sort of phased fire alert system in studios these days, where a live studio would only be evacuated at the very last moment.
This exists in Hospitals where if a fire alarm is triggered due to something as silly as a toaster, essential staff continue their work regardless, until it becomes dangerous for even them to stay put.
I'm sure this must be the case in BBC Television Centre and Sky's facilities in Isleworth.

Hmmm maybe , HTV Wests old w/s was excellent with a broadband stream and plenty of archives . Why did that go , i blame itv plc for that wonderful move backwards in time.
Central used to have a newsfeed too and thats gone by the way too. There's the ahem site we don't mention but thats days out of date too , so marvellous.
Good to hear it was nothing too serious with the toaster today. Something terrible like Lisa's vat of vegetable curry spilling all over the newsroom would have finished the place.

It's a shame that ITV don't seem too interested in using new media such as the internet to stream their bulletins (except for the ITV Local experiment which seems to still be restricted to the South).
Otherwise, we would have been able to see the bulletin online.
Oh well, Profits before viewers....

hehe apparently the story goes that on leaving Radio 1, Nicky Campbell decided to secretly re-record the emergency tape - probably a minidisc at that time - with a best-of compilation of his shows. They only found out that anything had happenned months later when there was an evacuation.
I would suspect that this was only the copy of the "tape" held in the studio to be manually played in, the silence detector based one would have remained the same which was why it wasn't discovered for some months.

Must be a powerful toaster if it can arrange for emergency DATs to be changed!

That is the case, but there comes a point when it isn't possible to leave studios occupied. It does depend on how the facilities management peole deal with alerts - in some places I've worked an automatic (sensor) trigger would be checked out before evacuating everyone.... but a manual trigger by a human ('break glass') would be an immediate evacuation

They are much bigger buildings/complexes - part of the building can be evacuated without the rest. A good example is the BBC bomb: the front of the builidng was totally evacuated, but the presentation staff at the back stayed in and carried on working.
A small, single facility such as Radio 1 or HTV West doesn't have that luxury

Yesterday (Sunday) viewers in the West received Westcountry News for the 12.05pm bulletin.
The newsreader said at the beginning: 'Apologies to viewers in the H TV West region for the loss of their news programme'. Yes, she said HTV not ITV!
Don't know if it was another toaster incident, but there was no explanation in the later 6.25pm programme.

At least, in the case of a failure, we DO now get an alternative ENGLISH region instead.
In the past, we always got that FOREIGN rubbish from Cardiff.
