The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister have all congratulated Ellen. That's how big this is.

You are joking ?

Why would we be? This is, after all, them congratulating any other British sportsperson that's broken a world record or won a world championship event... why is this any different to say, the achievements of Kelly Holmes in the Olympics or the England Rugby Team at the last Rugby World Cup? Ellen's right up there - a person that's survived for just over 71 days with minimal sleep, freeze-dried food, adverse weather, close encounters with sharks, unexpected damage to her trimaran etc... all at the comparatively young age of just 28.

Given this, the amount of coverage for Ellen's achievement is totally justified, and I am VERY proud of what she's accomplished.

I'm pretty sure that extended 10'o'clock news was longer than the one on the night that the Iraq war started, and perhaps even 9/11. The BBC needs a sense of proportion. I'm normally the first one to say that programmes should be cancelled in the event of a breaking story, but this was hardly the outbreak of war, was it?

It was only extended because it was actually happening live as the programme was about to end. If any major story was actually happening, and they had a live feed and people on the spot, they'd stick with it.

People need to realise that this country was made the world power it is today because of sailing. That's why this is so important.

On a pres point of view, News 24 are using split screen with the location of each picture over a darkenned part of the picture at the bottom (if that makes any sense) rather than putting a big black box under the 'LIVE'. They should do this all the time.

I'd love to see Dead Ringers analysis on this! Laughing This will fill ITV Evening News's '..and finally' stories for a few weeks. Rolling Eyes This is just one woman with an idea. We all have them for crying out loud!

Oh I think I'll dive into the Thames from the London Eye completely naked tomorrow Rolling Eyes Will I get a world record for that?

Such as waste of money. I'm not surprised Blair has praised her, its all about the "Britain is Working" campaign again. Rolling Eyes I'm sorry but I don't want this country remembered for a woman who sailed around the world on a boat. Mad

Whats that? Heavy storms across Falmouth coast?! Grrr! Go home Ellen and lock all the doors and windows, you might get burgled! Evil or Very Mad

Much rather that than many things we're thought of at the moment!

Why is it a waste of money? Who cares - it's B&Q and Castorama's money anyway? Why is this a waste of money, but the billions spent on people kicking lballs around a pitch not?

The ITV News Channel started with continuous coverage from 09:30 drafting Alastair Stewart in to chair their coverage. I think they did have advert breaks up until 10:00 but ever since have stuck with continuous coverage.

ITV News seem to be the only news operation providing multiple feeds of the event with Mark Austin and Adrian Britton popping up on ITV1's This Morning for regular updates every ten minutes or so.

Ive been flicking around all coverage and it's all been good.

And ITV NC has been making a lot of use of Westcountry's reporter in Falmouth.

The ITV1 announcer has just said that today's Lunchtime News will be extended.
