Channel 4 have just shown a promo for their news at 7 without any sound, just random pictures of people celebrating around the US. Voiceover said: "That's the Channel 4 News at seven."

Jon Snow was 'live' outside the White House - quite funny to watch really!

BBC trounced ITV in the ratings.

BBC One show got 1.6 million and a 25% share (This doesn't include the couple of hundred thousand watching on the News Channel AIUI? Sky and BBC News Channel were in the same order of magnitude - though as the evening wore on Sky lost out to the News Channel AIUI)

ITV got 300,000 and a 7% share.

As always, the British public were stupid. Thankfully though this time around the American's were not.

I only saw an hour or so of coverage - the first 15 minutes of both Sky, the BBC and ITV.

Sky started off well enough, but I think suffered from not having a studio base to tie everything together.

The BBC was truly awful - Dimbleby seemed to come over all Wogan and it was embarrassing to watch - and considering it was also being aired in America, an insult to the viewers of BBC America. The graphics were truly awful, even worse than their current package. I guess Lambie Nairn are to blame as usual!

ITV though looked fantastic. The graphics were the best I've seen from ITV, while the studio was at it's best, although I agree it's time they ditched that desk. I thought from the first few minutes it might be a bit thin on content, but from the comments here it seems they kind of benefited from that, and also from their partnership with NBC. Considering the result wasn't truly in doubt (in hindsight at least). I think being first was very important.

Any news on the ratings for the US networks?

The BBC was indeed awful, but it was very entertaining

When I put BBC News and ITV News on it just seemed so... awkward.

Sky News and CNN - very over the top but enjoyed watching more than the others, if I'm honest.

I'm surprised nobody seems to have mentioned gore vidal's appearance. I missed it myself but it seems many others found it most amusing

Well, As I really couldn't be bothered to fire up the laptop in the early hours, I may as well do it now - just to keep myself awake.
Compared to the goodies on offer in the 2004 election coverage, 2008 was a complete backwards lurch.

CBS rebroadcast via Sky News Active, spotted 2004 - Missing 2008

ABC News via BBCi News - spotted (briefly) 2004 - Missing 2008

CSPAN Election coverage via BBC Parliement - spotted 2004 - Missing 2008

NBC Network Coverage via CNBC Europe - spotted till 5am 2004 - Missing 2008

The only good thing was the apperance of the CNN US coverage until 8.30am this morning, the perma-bored Brit Hume anchoring Fox News coverage, and NDTV (of all channels) rebroadcasting the MSNBC output until 3am.

Poor effort. 4/10.

Let's face it the BBC were crap last night but no surprise they won in the ratings, because they always do with Election broadcasts.

ITV had a far superior graphics package, were far more professional while inclusing some lightheartedness also, had a great visible partnership with a US network, none of which the BBC did well at all. They didn't take a break at all either, not before 5am anyway when I went to sleep.

ITV should be commended highly for putting on an excellent programme which unfortunately was always going to be a loss for them ratings- and revenue-wise. It's also a shame they have to make way for GMTV.

The BBC could have made more effort in so many ways.

Thanks. I'm finding them surprisingly low to be honest - a combined audience of probably less than 30m doesn't suggest it was as important an election as most have made out.

Agreed entirely. I watched primarily ITV but flicked back and forth, and was surprisingly disappointed with the BBC's effort. I found ITN's programme much more watchable, not just graphic-wise, but content too. The whole set-up, from graphics, to reporting, to Alastair Stewart's unique presenting style, did seem somewhat 'cosy' but you could feel the excitement held by Irvine, Neely, Etchingham, Mates and of course Stewart as they gradually delivered results. (Re: ads - there were no ad breaks at all on the channel until well into GMTV's newshour).
