Compare the maps below:

from the ABC News website.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a3/US_Electoral_College_Map.PNG/350px-US_Electoral_College_Map.PNG
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Electoral_College

Add up the blue states:

IL 21
ME 4
NH 4
MA 12
VT 3
CT 7
NJ 15
DE 3
MD 10
DC 3
PA 21
Tot: 103

therefore ABC did their sums wrong.

Although the map shows Maine being called as a Dem. victory, I think they are only counting THREE of the four college votes for Obama.

This perhaps makes more sense that they can't add up?

Dimbleby ranting on the US electoral procedure compared to the British way, I have to say I do agree mostly with him lol.

The idea that the Electoral College is what is counted rather than a straight percentage of the vote per state.

I hope ABC realise their error before the end of the night when they have one vote unaccounted for!

But then they would show 50 for McCain.

The quality of the stream of BBC News has fallen dramatically around 2am, perhaps a sudden influx of people logging on?

Not necessarily. The fourth vote may remain undeclared, as is currently the case with CNN.

The map shows a blue state, but when you actually open up the state information, it shows that it is accounting for 3 democratic votes and one undeclared vote. I think ABC are doing this also, but the BBC are interpreting this as 4 democratic votes.

If that's the case then ABC aren't reflecting that on their website.

ITV/NBC are the only to not call Arkansas still which is why their 70 is 6 behind BBC/ABC.

I've given up trying to work out what Sky have called that the others haven't.

BBC on 175
CNN and ABC on 174

This confirms that the difference shown is Maine

There could, therefore, be further discrepancies when Nebraska closes.
