Channel 4 has a public service remit

... to provide an alternative to the other two, which surely is exactly their reason for not broadcasting the elections. Do they even do election night shows on general elections?

Indeed they don't. They also don't show PPBs or the Queen's Speech. Their public service remit is entirely different to that for BBC or Channel 3.

C4 certainly used to show the Queen's Christmas Message, though perhaps voluntarily. I'm sure they also used to show PEBs but not PPBs ?

I really love these RPA affected days ... Not a significant politician to be seen on any channel before 10pm.

AIUI they were all specifically excluded from the Broadcasting Act which also turned C4 into a corporation (was that 1992?)

Indeed, it's quite a relief isn't it after the last few weeks! Laughing

I think this map

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/elections/local_council/08/map/html/map.stm

shows why it is pretty pointless for much coverage to take place in England outside London. Many of those areas that are voting aren't counting until Friday morning anyway

I imagine BBC1's programme will focus on the London elections mostly

Oh yes, because those areas in the North - the majority of those that are voting - are so slow at counting aren't they.

I heard they'd got the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission in to do the counting, so expect the results around mid-June Laughing

Joking aside, I think you'll find that more than half the population of England and all of Wales are voting today. The big empty areas on the map that aren't voting have very low population density. The fact that all the main metropolitan areas and unitary councils are voting is what makes the difference. It's only London that doesn't announce until tomorrow - the rest will be tonight!

Last year was Assembly elections. There equivilant of a general election. Slightly more important than local elections

Assembly elections are not "our" equivalent of general elections. We in Wales are actually a part of the UK you know, and we take part in the general election too! Assembly elections are additional (and totally unnecessary) elections.

Did you vote for or against the establishment of a devolved parliament?

Well maybe I'm wrong but I know that the 5 metropolitan councils in West Yorkshire are not counting until Friday

Yeah it's more that just london not councting till tomorrow. Parts of Wales I know of, plus you have a few in England, including Reading. A massive story if the Conservetives win.

Also remember that just because your council is having elections doesnt mean you will get to vote. In some areas only 1/3 of the councillors will be voted for this year.
