London doesn't have a network feed to opt into like the other regions but it's not an issue to send the network or studio out up a line to BH so they can put graphics on

You say it's not an issue, but presumably making sure the round trip via BH isn't delayed with respect to TC1 > Pres > Crystal Palace is quite important, otherwise it will jump when they opt?

Possibly, although would there be that much of a delay?
Studio => Red Bee => TV Centre =>TX
Studio => BH => TV Centre => TX
The only real difference is the extra mile or 3 between TVC and BH which is nothing

Can someone in the know explain why the HD picture quality varied so much in the BBC's Election 2010 coverage from TC1?

The ground floor pictures were the usual poor TC1 HD quality, really grainy, especially on dark clothing, yet the stuff from the balcony where Paxman was, was excellent.

That depends on the opt-chain and distribution systems doesn't it? If the opt-switch is fed via a decoded MPEG2 feed, and the feed of studio to BH is fed uncompressed, then you will have a 12+ frame delay between the TVC studio output on the back-end of the opt switch and the TVC studio feed from BH on the other side of the opt-switch won't you?

Distance isn't a major delay issue with routing (1 frame = 40ms which is quite a long distance at the speed of light) - but any temporal compression can cause a much longer delay due to the requirement to buffer at encode and decode to generate B- and P- frames.

He says he will resign by autumn. Subtle but crucial difference, I think.

Oh I agree totally. Sorry, should have phrased it better. Just to say that we probably wouldn’t have rolling coverage breaking in at this stage.

Yes, he's Prime Minister until either he's replaced after a leadership election or until the Conservatives form a government - minority or coalition
