ITV News announces Election plans
ITV News is set to produce the fastest, best and most exciting General Election Coverage yet.
A team of top presenters has been lined up to provide in-depth analysis but they will also delve deep behind the political spin. Ground-breaking programme formats and graphics will help demystify and explain the complex issues which really matter to ITV News viewers.
“Throughout the election campaign, we aim to be Britain 's most comprehensive Election Service,” said ITV News Editor-in-Chief David Mannion .
“We'll be putting politicians and their pledges to the test, asking all the questions which voters need answering. All of our programmes will offer distinctive, lively coverage of the campaign as it unfolds. At ITV News we'll be making this crucial process relevant and engaging and explain just how the proposed policies will affect their lives.”
ITV News will tailor its three daily national bulletins to give viewers the information, insight and analysis of the key issues.
Political editor Nick Robinson will lead the coverage, offering his unparalleled insight into the big issues. Meanwhile, the ITV News Channel will provide on-going extensive in-depth coverage with Alastair Stewart interviewing politicians and commentators on his daily show.
In the lead-up to polling day, senior political correspondent John Ray will follow Tony Blair on the campaigning trail, political correspondent Libby Wiener will be with Michael Howard, and correspondent Gerraint Vincent will follow Charles Kennedy’s team.
ITV Lunchtime News
The new hour-long ITV Lunchtime News with Nicholas Owen and Katie Derham will be the place where viewers get to have their say in "Ballot Box Jury live". (for more information on Ballot Box Jury see below)
Every day, the programme will have a spokesperson from one of the parties live on the show, who will be joined by one of our Ballot Box jurors from their constituency or region – giving them an opportunity to ask the questions they want answered directly.
There will also be a daily interactive strand on the Lunchtime News to enable viewers to put the politicians on the spot by emailing or texting their questions and comments.
ITV Evening News
The ITV Evening News with Mark Austin and Nina Hossain will highlight to viewers that the election is about their lives and the crucial things that really matter to them.
A key element of this will be the Ballot Box Jury - the most ambitious election project ever undertaken by ITV News.
“We have teamed up with Populus to get the most comprehensive insight to date into voters’ perception of the election campaign as weeks go by,” said David Mannion.
“To do this, we have recruited 20 regional “ballot box juries” from 20 marginal seats across Great Britain , and out of these we will recruit a national ITV News jury of 12. This essentially amounts to a giant focus group and ITV News will get their reactions to the campaign and most-talked about issues each week for a real snapshot of the mood across the country. Towards the end of the election campaign, we’ll take our national jurors to meet face-to-face with the party leaders.”
News at Ten Thirty
The News at Ten Thirty with Trevor McDonald will cover the campaign with depth and analysis. “Unspun” will take a regular look at the real story behind announcements and campaign messages delivering all the facts and figures to help viewers make up their own minds about the torrent of information flowing from the political parties. ITV News has recruited a panel of experts and political insiders who will offer specialist knowledge and unrivalled understanding of all the issues.
For another programme feature, Body Politic, we have asked the Head of the University of Manchester ’s School of Psychological Sciences , Professor Geoff Beattie, to analyse the politicians’ body language throughout the run-up to the election.
ITV NEWS ELECTION NIGHT SPECIAL
Thursday 5 May, 10pm - 6am Friday 6 May on ITV1 and the ITV News Channel
ITV News has put together an expert team to produce the fastest results programme of the night, with the best analysis as well as entertainment. The programme will feature reactions from all the key players and analysis using ground-breaking graphics.
From 10pm all the way through until 6am, Jonathan Dimbleby will anchor from the studio, Alastair Stewart will provide analysis using state of the art graphics and Nick Robinson will be on hand for insight and commentary. Mary Nightingale will be in the studio providing regular news updates.
In addition, award-winning cartoonist Gerald Scarfe will draw the most memorable moments of the night live in the ITV News studio. "I shall be in the studio drawing all the combatants,” he said. “Nasty drawings of them, I think, to lighten the proceedings. Doing eight hours of live drawings is a real challenge. I’m sure all my mistakes will be broadcast.”
There will also be regular links to the Election Night Party on a luxury boat just opposite the Houses of Parliament. Mark Austin and Katie Derham will interview guests who are set to include George Monbiot, Martin Bell, Ian Hislop, Germaine Greer and Richard Branson for their reactions as results come through. ITV News also has exclusive access to the London Eye with stunning views across the river, and will be conducting interviews and updates against this fantastic backdrop.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Owen will be taking to the skies in the ITV News Helicopter to gauge reaction in different constituencies as the night progresses.
“The General Election is an incredibly high profile and important news event,” said executive producer Craig Oliver. “We will be pulling out all stops to produce news programmes that are informative but also engaging and relevant.”
ITV News will use its virtual reality studio to really get behind the developing story as election results start pouring in helping presenters to explain and analyse events in a simple and engaging manner.
“Most people think the big battle of election night is between the major parties, but in reality it’s about the battle between the broadcasters to come up with the most spectacular and innovative graphics,” says Creative Director Glenn Marshall. “It’s a time to really showcase pioneering design and technology.”
The backdrop of ITV News’ main election set itself is a feast of virtual trickery – the graphics team has mapped the whole eight floor central atrium of the ITN building into a virtual system to create the illusion that the set is suspended in the middle.
The ITV News team will also have the back-up of ELVIS, the ELection VISualiser which was created and developed by the in house team.
“Historically it’s always been difficult to show the unfolding election night picture using a UK map,” Ian White, Head of Computer Graphics, explains. “On a traditional electoral map a landslide either way can look almost identical. But ELVIS can turn this data into a three dimensional landscape that shows the huge peaks and troughs that the parties hold, telling the real story of the night.”
Political editor Nick Robinson will be interactively controlling ELVIS to get right to the heart of the story and provide insightful analysis and commentary as the night progresses.
In addition, award-winning cartoonist Gerald Scarfe will be using his acidic pen to draw the night for ITV News – live in the studio - and his drawings will be incorporated into graphics, the swingometer and a 3D House of Commons.
