Jasmine Lawrence, a channel editor at BBC News, has been removed from playing any part in the corporation's coverage of the European and local council elections after tweeting a derogatory comment about Ukip.

Lawrence, who has now shut her Twitter account, posted a tweet on Wednesday that said: "#WhyImVotingUkip – to stand up for white, middle class, middle aged men w sexist/racist views, totally under represented in politics today."

The tweet was posted the day before the local and European elections, which the BBC is covering for the first time from studios at its Hertfordshire home in Elstree, following moving out of Television Centre in West London.

Lawrence subsequently deleted her account but the corporation has taken the incident seriously and launched an investigation.

Only last week, BBC director of news and current affairs James Harding told a social media conference organised by the BBC Academy of Journalism and the New York Times that corporation staff should not tweet anything they would not say on air – where they are bound by strict BBC guidelines on impartiality.

The BBC said Lawrence – who was duty editor during the 2010 general election – will not now play a part in the European and local council election coverage.

"Jasmine Lawrence was tweeting from a personal account," said a BBC spokesman. "She has been reminded of her responsibility to uphold BBC guidelines. She has deactivated her Twitter account and will now be playing no part in the BBC's election coverage in coming days."

As others have said, this seems to be a practice run for next year's GE. They've previously done Local/Euro elections from N9 and managed quite well, but that's when they were within spitting distance of the newsroom.

It's good that they've recreated (or removed from storage) the 2010 GE set, as it looked amazing in TC1, and I doubt 'Joe Public' is going to notice the difference with it being in leafy Hertfordshire instead. Very Happy

Question Time is live isn't it?
And after that is the Elections.

Both presented by David, so how does this work? Confused

What a horrible opening shot to Sky's election coverage. Having double headed pres really doesn't work with that set up.

No.

It's usually recorded earlier in the evening of broadcast.

If you mean the LED newsroom background, it was in 2010 too.
