I've just seen Sky News show off their plans for Thursday night - a look inside the new studio and an explanation of the graphics.

Or if they've already been posted, could someone point me to the right page no.?
Thanks

That'd be this one:

Looks quite similar to 2001, but maybe a bit more lighted white opaquey bits.

Tragic politicos that we are, we will be having a couple of TVs, a couples of crates of alcohol, and several dozen pizzas.

Question is- which TV's going to have the sound on?

I'll be holding the remote controllers like a vice, so I think you can guess from that!

In truth, though, whoever is the most interesting.

I think both the BBC and Sky do very well on election night, and they all end up with the same guests. The guests Sky had at 9pm were on the BBC at 10pm, and the BBC guests at 10pm were on Sky at 10.30pm, etc. They all wander about between the studios during the night.

As someone who really understands politics, I would tend to drift towards Sky. I think BBC election night coverage has a tendency to over-explain everything in order to make it as accessible as possible. That's good for people who don't know what's going on, but I think Sky know that the only viewers they have are the really hardcore sort, and the analysis from Michael Thrasher is nicely technical and complicated.

Plus, if it's Boulton Vs. David Dimbleby, I'd go for Boulton any day.

Up until about midnight, it is a bit of a flat experience. They all go about with about 15 results saying 'well, we're waiting for the real rush to come through', and interviewing all the parties, then from 1am to 3am 250 or so results flood in and they just sit there saying 'that's a shock... what implications does that have...'

It's a very fun night, though. The most comical part will be when the exit polls come out and (assuming a Tory thrashing here) the Tories say 'oh it's only an exit poll, but you're right, it doesn't look good' and throughout the night you start to see the progression as slowly but surely Tories start admitting that actually they're buggered again.

Then they start talking about leadership, and by 10am the next morning I'll bet my life that Sky News will be running a 'who should be the next Tory leader' vote... interestingly, in their vote at the last election, Iain Duncan Smith got just 4% of the Sky public vote.

Viewing figures have been down for the past few elections, but it wouldn't surprise me to see this one pick up a little bit. I think there's a little less certainty this time.

Hmm....Boulton v Dimbleby- probably Boulton (only just)

Boulton v Marr- Marr by a long way (the man's a genius)

Martin Stanford v Peter Snow- let's not even talk about that one....Snow all the way.

Definitely be flicking between Sky and BBC One (or Two as it is here in Scotland).

Absolutely no need to even switch over to ITV for a quick minute this time- they're sharing their exit poll with the BBC! But seriously, perhaps during the depths of the 2am hour, the insightful view of an F-list celebrity on politics (think Bono but even dumber) might just be the car crash TV required to stick it out the bitter end.

Sorry for 3 posts in a row- but the BBC studio is always (OK, at least since 92) ridiculously lavish....it's the kind of thing that can be justified for the public service broadcaster for just 12 hours of TV.

But I'm always left feeling that this is kind of how News 24 should be all the time- I think I'll have the same feeling on Thursday, but we'll probably see that kind of News 24 studio before Brown calls the next election (two assumptions- both pretty safe)....of course I'm talking about the new broadcasting house- I have a funny feeling that any initial plans for News 24's space in the building will be torn up and redrawn after Sky reveal their new mammoth studio (probably in June).

You gotta compete after all.

We have yet to se the Beeb's studio fully on screen but is it just me that thinks that if they shot a clever time lapse of that studio before they took it down it could be used as a backdrop for N6?

Yes but News 24 is run on a much smaller budget. Election night requires a full complement of crew and a fully staffed gallery (and hubs for the all the OB feeds), 24 is much smaller scale. I'm sure studios will continue to improve but there are plenty of other limits they're working within besides the actual design.
