I think the days of the virtual studios are dead- they just don't look very good. ITV News just looks awful IMO. I think people much prefer to see a 'real' set (I use inverted commas because parts can be virtual but the majority should be real).

The majority of the ITV News set is real.

Hmmm, Mad but ITV's News studio is REAL! It only has a virtual backdrop - exactly like the BBC News - real chairs, real floor and a real desk just with a fake backdrop!

Of course ITV News sometimes use a cso studio for the ITV News Channel when required and also use it for small snippets of the programme like The Briefing. Im sure BBC also use cso for some news reports and of course Peter Snow's swingometer isn't real - is it?

The backdrop is really there, just in a different colour, so it isnt really fake. BBC News background is a fake of a newsroom, whereas ITV news isnt a fake of anything if you think about it. Its just video.

"The backdrop is really there" - not sure I understand. The background on ITV News is chromakeyed on. And as for it being "just video", that's the whole reason they've got it. They can put any source they like into it.

The point I was trying to make was that there was a larger amount of fake trickery on the BBC News rather than ITV News. When ITV are in the Theatre of News everything is real and there just so happens to be a background image superimposed with some floating squares and some video behind the presenters!

Whereas the BBC News has a total fake backdrop of a news room that doesnt actually exist. Also their presenters stand up at huge tv's to present some items.

I'm not sure which one is better but both serve their purposes and can be changed quite easily for something like the election.

BUT

It is rumoured that ITV will feature a fake view of the ITN atrium throughout Election Night and so I will decide later whether I like the idea of using the backdrop for that purpose!

There was a picture of the election team in yesterdays Express magazine - they were doing an interview with Katie Derham - and the picture showed them close up in the theatre of news with the atrium on the backdrop - from the picture it actually looked like it could be rather impressive.

What I am trying to say is that the newswall is projected on the green screen for presenters to see, and so technically it is really there, we just see it in a different colour. BBC News is more fake, as its a fake video of a fake newsroom, thats all.

Maybe if its looks good, they might use that as a backdrop when ITV gets their new look in the Autumn, as the squares backdrop will be out of date!?

The background projectors on the BBC national set show the image as we see it. That is, the presener will see the fake newsroom just the same as we do on screen- no different colours. ITV presenters will see a very faint image on the green chromakey background. So, what you're saying about BBC news being fake isnt true. Yes, they have an image of a imaginary newsroom, but when was the last time you saw squares and other images flying around the place ala ITV? Theyre both 'fake', but the BBC set shows the true image on the projectors.

I know it shows the true image on the projecters, but the newsroom isnt real. Thats what I am saying.

True image? lol Very Happy

Both studios have digitally created elements but at least the ITV News studio is a real studio with a rectangle to insert some images relevant to the news (not to create a fake studio)

WHEREAS

The BBC News has a imaginary studio projected behind the presenters - which is more fake that ITV's studio.

Perhaps I should clarify since I started this-

The main "thing" in the ITV news studio is the background- hence the term "Theatre of News"....it gives the overriding impression of being fake.

The BBC news national set has a fake background, but the overriding impression is real- the screens, wooden floor and desk.

Yes you can argue it either way but that's just the way I think a first-time viewer would see it....obviously News 24 and Sky News are entirely real.

Question is- which TV's going to have the sound on?

How can blue squares be less fake than a fake newsroom? And the image on the Theatre of News isn't actually there...
