I think it's a bit poor there has not been any extra regional election programming on the BBC this time.

Remember "It's Your Call" last time around, The North's version was hosted by Gordon Burns, and was also simulcast on BBC Local Radio (right in the middle of the usual sport or music programming no doubt)

Curious to see Adam Boulton in his 'final thought' tonight, his comments went along the lines of:

"So what did I make of the party leaders? Well, I think it would be entirely improper for a political journalist to voice any opinion as to his views, that's assuming that I have any''.

Kick in the teeth for anyone at Sky who thought they might 'Fox-it-up' a little.

In the RadioTimes (which now lacks a space) Boulton says...
Quote:
I haven't voted since 1979. David Frost sais to me once: "I don't vote because they are all my friends." I wouldn't exactly regard them as friends [laughs], but personal feeling and feelings about policy do get confused - I find it easier knowing I can talk to the party leaders without feeling that I'm involved.

Bo*locks

He obviously can't express an opinion on the election during the campaign.

But surely even you expect a more opinionated piece in the style of Fox after the election (assuming "The Factor" takes one of the new evening slots).

I've just seen a trailer for ITV's election coverage. The music in the background was their theme for the 2001 election.

I certainly don't expect it from Boulton, or any of the existing group of Sky presenters, and I think it would be pretty stupid to assume that.

Given that he is the key figure in their political coverage, a very public outlining of his view that journalists should not express an opinion sets the stall for every other political presenter/correspondent (who will come under his jurisdiction) to be neutral as well.

He hasn't expressed a personal opinion in the decade and a half he has been their political editor, and his reputation is such that he wouldn't want to damage that. I doubt very much that he would put all of that at risk. He doesn't really strike me as the sort of person to bow to pressure from high up.

It wouldn't surprise me to see his 'fair to all' approach extended to all of the other prime time slots, and that's not something I have a problem with. I don't think it is necessary, but it is in no way biased.

I think it is better that we wait and see, don't you.

BBC One's Election Night will start at 9.55pm on Thursday 5th, simulcasting on News 24 and after 4.00am on Parliament (Parliament showing Scotland's Vote 2005 between 9.55pm - 4.00am).

"David Dimbleby leads the team bringing you the fastest results, the best analysis and all the human drama of election night. Jeremy Paxman talks to the key players, while Andrew Marr finds out what the parties are saying off the record.

Fiona Bruce provides election news updates throughout the night and Peter Snow brings us his latest state of the art virtual reality graphics, including the swingometer. Natasha Kaplinsky, Anna Ford, Kirsty Wark, John Simpson and Rageh Omar are among those reporting as the story unfolds around the UK."

No sign of Huw Edwards, will he be presenting the News on this night, and what time will the bulletin be at?

Not sure if it has been a regular feature - but first time I've caught it - Peter Snow going over a lot of the election "figures" which showed pretty much at length the election graphics and studio (so far).

Looked good - although Peter Snow's swingometer graphics looked like they're in an apartment.

No doubt this has been a regular feature each week and I will now look like a fool.

Yes - it has been a regular feature, but you're no fool Smile

The set actually reminded me of the 1999 national set - what with the silver railings and creamish walls, and the spotlights.

This is the first time they showed the election night studio on Newsnight Saturday, previously they had been showing behind the scenes in the One/Six/Ten studio, where Peter Snow had been doing his pieces on the opinion polls for the news bulletins (green chromakey area is opposite the main news set). The main difference with the graphics is that the backdrop of the chromakeyed area is different, to mix in with the look of the real set, whereas the opinion poll pieces use a backdrop like the news set.

The election night set is interesting - from the brief glimpses we got of it - it has a balcony area like the 2001 set had, and it is mostly light colours, mostly cream, with plenty of wood flooring.
