Unless...and I stress this is speculation...BBC are planning something about the councils on TWO or NEWS 24. Then Scottish viewers would have the double whammy of a half-baked election programme, or local council elections. Though if that were to happen, surely someone at QMD would have the sense to put national election on TWO, since English local elections definitely don't matter compared to general election.

Half baked - yet more relevant to Scottish viewers than English council elections???

Although I am not sure why folk are so unhappy here. Is it that

1) They want to see what is happening across the UK (this would be covered in the proposed set up)

2) The snazzy graphics and resources will be limited at QMD (so what - the coverage will be relevant and not the set of Eurovision)

3) Our journalists are crap and cannot be trusted to produce a credible election programme.(I won't even dignify this one!!)

Lets face it while London will always be Disney World - I don't see QMD as being on the same par as Cadona's Amusement Park in Aberdeen.

Studios have improved at QMD - and if you think that is rough look at the archive of Grampian's Queen Cross days. A programme is not just about the glamourous graphics, titles and an older male headmasterly telling off naughty politicians - we have moved on somewhat (I hope)

Anyway - I have a life - I'm more outraged at not getting any Irn Bru at my grocers tonight!! Laughing

Actually I just think the presenters/journalists of BBC Scotland just aren't up to the level of Dimblebey, Paxman, Snow et al. On top of this the politicians being interviewed for reaction are non-entities and utterly worthless people. I would expect high ranking cabinet ministers (Prescott, Straw, Clarke etc.) and shadow cabinet ministers (Letwin etc.).

So quite simply the reason why I'll be angry if I can't see the BBC's NATIONAL coverage of the election (from London) is that the Scottish version is vastly inferior for anyone who knows anything (or is remotely interested) in politics.

Scotland is a subset of the UK. BBC Scotland will pick the best presenters in Scotland. BBC National pick the best presenters in the UK. The same people cannot be in two places at once. Therefore, the presenters on BBC Scotland will always be inferior. The only justification would be if the content was different (which is why we have Regional programs at all).

The same applies to guests, pundits and so on.

However, this election is one story. Beyond one's own constituency (and we're not having 646 regional programmes), what happens in other seats is equally important, whether that seat happens to be in Scotland or England or Wales (Northern Ireland don't get counted til the next day).

What we end up with is two presenters telling the same story. The National BBC will always have more resources than local, and it seems a waste to present the story.

Furthermore, the BBC have 2 terrestrial channels, and nothing else to do all night for one night every four/five years. Why can't they do what they did last time, and present detailed Scottish coverage on BBC TWO Scotland for those who are interested (Heck, every region could be told to do the same).

This would in turn allow Mckenzie and co to focus on all the Scottish stories that the BBC obviously think there will be. If they are the only terrestrial coverage, they'll try to cover National stories from the tartan sofa, and as I say above they can never do that as well as London will. So we lose out on all counts.

Well I will be watching an excellent election show on BBC Scotland - those who don't watch will be no loss to this coverage.

No-one actually knows what we'll be getting. I have not made my mind up until I see it - or am I just too inferior to look into the future and see what BBC Scotland has in store - probably.

Perhaps I'm not that far up my rear to watch the telly in the first place.

But the fact is, is that the studio will definately not be as good as the national programme and that's why I don't want the Scottish show! What's the point in this Scottish election show anyway?

Sorry I've just read the last few pages of this thread before my last reply and now am more in context.

Antz, clearly you are too thick to read the posts before your own (Pot, Kettle, Trevor I know) but the discussion here is about why Scotland require an opt for Scotland is required when in this election Scotland matters even less than it used to. Only you and winifred the second here seem to think this is a dicussion about pres still.

And as for you Anne's Fan. Why is it needed? Why is it more "relevant to Scotland" ? This is a UK election that will be decided by constituencies in England. As there are less constituencies in Scotland now we have even less of an impact.

Plus the "half-baked" comment you seem incapable of understanding referd to people in Scotland getting a rubbish council show and a rubbish Scotland opt whereas England would get a good, RELEVENT election show and a crap council one.

So why is a Scottish opt needed? Please explain as the rest of us can't see the reasoning.

EDIT: F*CKING HELL! Have you seen Teflon Tony this morning, He looks like David Dickingson, honestly he's, well, Orange!
