Back in 1992, the coverage was actually split across ITV and Channel 4. ITV had the main overnight programme. Then (if I remember rightly), when ITV went to TV-AM at 6am, the election programme continued on Channel 4, with coverage switching back to ITV later in the morning.

TV-AM ITN Election 1982

from the tv-ark
it has a clip of the 1982 election, before the birth of channel4, but this is when ITN links up with TV-am, for the elction coverage

It was 1983, not '82.

Just as well, TV-am didn't start until 1983.

So, in fact Channel4 were broadcasting then, so your point is pointless Weather Man.

Channel 4's continual ignorance of election night has always confused me.
Considering they offer some of the best coverage in the run up to the poll, it seems extraordinary that they go and ignore the night itself.

I was at C4 tonight for the Channel 4 Political Awards. In his introduction Andy Duncan (new C4 chief exec) said that they are planning to spend substantially more this time round to beef up their election coverage.

Do they really have to put Jonathan Dimbleby as main achor for it. I like Dimbers, but can't he at least front 'Dimbleby' specials as part of ITV's Election coverage.
Can't it be called ITN Election 2005 - the reasons for it: The location it is from is ITN Headquarters, they're using ITN people [apart from Jonathan] and it is ITN's resources. Or could it be that bugger Charles Allen's plan to force us to bring down the legendary ITN name, and force us with ITV News.

Anyway, I hope the following people will be on the ITV Election 2005:
Arrow John Suchet main anchor
Arrow Nick Robinson sitting next to Suchet
Arrow Alastair Stewart results man
Arrow Angela Rippon Elections history-woman
Arrow Mark Webster following Tories
Arrow John Draper following Labour
Arrow James Mates following Lib Dems

Also: Angus Walker, Libby Wiener, Trevor McDonald, Bill Neely and Nicholas Owen following other parties.

Finally, there also should be regular regional updates from ITV regions' senior newsreaders.

I am only posting things which are relevant and if it is not a crime, I offer my opinion, which you do as well, Londoner.

The line-up has not yet been announced unless someone knows otherwise. My insider will inform me as soon as it has been finalised. I am sure however that the line-up has been drafted.

Following the award Alastair Stewart won this week, it wouldn't suprise me if he gets the main role, that is unless Jonathan Dimbleby is under some kind of contract.

Bets on for the following:

Anchor - Jonathan Dimbleby or Alastair Stewart
Political Editor - Nick Robinson
Politial grillings - Alastair Stewart (if not main presenter)
Analysis/Virtual Studio- Nicholas Owen OR Andrea Catherwood
Updates - Mary Nightingale

It think it is fair to say Mary will play a key role in this year's election. She is due to come back from maternity leave and IS their most senior female presenter. She also played role in the last election.

Any other realistic offerings. I think we can forget the possibility of Angela Rippon taking part, although the re-emergence of the 'old school' presenter is David Mannion's doing, so I guess we could all be suprised.

Does anyone have any info on the BBC general election line-up? I would imagine that David Dimbleby will definitely present, as he has done for the last 20 or 30 years. Also, Andrew Marr will probably be in the studio giving analysis. I guess that John Simpson, Mark Mardell and Guto Harri will be with the three main parties. Any ideas?
