My views:-
BBC News 24
Good - Simple 2-d design.
Bad - Even more screen clutter and similar to previous elections
SKY¦News
Good - some effort has gone into them.
Good - effective back-wall animations.
Bad - animation can get irritating.
Bad - alignment issues
Bad - more screen clutter
ITV News
Good - No extra screen clutter
Good - Multi-coloured and neutral (white) versions
Bad - understated and no animated screen graphics yet )backgrounds only)
I think it's a bit early to judge which Channel will provide the best graphics/presentation. I remember an election night (was it from last year?) and people here were pleasantly surprised by the ITV News onscreen graphics and the simplicity of things.
None of them are spectacular yet and im holding judgment on which I prefer!

What I think...
BBC News 24 Clever logo and I quite like the sting but it's a bit too basic at the moment. Not too keen on the horrible black Election 2005 dog. 8/10
SKY News Very swish graphics but sometimes its a bit "in your face". Why is that public opinion slug on all the time. Can't they just display it every 5 minutes or so. Also the graphics are poorly put together and don't line up properly. 7/10
ITV News Cheap, tacky looking graphics. No effort put in to them. 4/10
Within the next few days I expect the graphic packages to be tweaked so it's still early days presentation wise.

The Interest Index is a daily Sky/YouGov poll asking whether voters are interested or bored with the campaign.
Also, what's worm polling?
I've never heard of any of these terms?! Where have they come from?
Can't quite remember what it stands for, but a WORM is a real-time poll tracking how opinions change during, for example, a speech. They first used it during the budget.

WORM
Witness Opinion Response Monitor
They've used it only once before, in one of the budgets. CBS used it for the presidential debates.
I've always thought it was pretty pointless. Audiences never are really THAT responsive to anything said, it very much depends on how they're feeling that day, the time of day, etc.

I'm not quite sure what your argument is.
You say that you want them to make a bigger effort, and complain that Sky have done to much and News 24 have done too little.
From what I can see, Sky have used a bit of initiative and taken the information available and tried to make it as accessible as possible. The facts about constituencies are useful and relevant, and really do add to the coverage.
I think - as with the last campaign - News 24 have nice looking graphics, but there's a lack of information. Take Michael Howard's speech this afternoon: Sky had a strap and a small summary panel at the side and details of the location and the swing required... all useful, all relevant. News 24 had a strap with one line of information on it, which if you'd been listening hard enough you'd have picked up on anyway.
I'm also a little surprise News 24 haven't - given their claims to be the analysts of the news - not got any analysis programmes in their schedule. Maybe they will from Monday, but I've heard nothing so far.

Just come from flicking through the news channels - here are my thoughts..
BBC News (network and 24) Nice, clear and not to disracting. One slight problem is the word 'election' appearing on upto 4 times on the same screen.
ITV News Awful - were they caught out by the date of the announcment? And, it could be argued here that having the ticker background in red all the time, could be giving a slight bias to Labour.
Sky News Sort it out. Tickers, revolving blocks, fly-in text, animated backgrounds. Horrible, messy and unnecessary.
Look, they've had 4 years to come up with election 2005, and it's either a case of too much (sky) not enough thought (itv) or almost there but trying too hard (BBC)
Hatton Cross marks it - 7/10 for effort.

So did the "tierd" discussion have as many tiers as Charlie and Camilla's cake will have?
And do I take it your other thread was going to be "frash" as a "doosy"?
"Perpahps" we should be told!

I have attempted to watch the news channels tonight to further my thoughts on the first airing of each channel's election graphics.
The thing that has stood out the most is that I couldn't watch SKY¦News for more than a few minutes without my eyes hurting. My eyes were drawn to the bottom of the screen and attempting to read a ticker that only fills 2/3 of the screen is difficult. The continual distraction of the animating VOTE 2005 slug is a negative even though it is well though out and designed! I did like the way a presenter was stood at the news wall and the camera zoomed out and they were superimposed at the main chamber of the Houses of Parliament around the presenter! (It got a bit repetitive after seeing it the third time - but all channels are guilty of repetition somewhere along the line)
Over to ITV News Channel and you wouldn't really have thought that an election had been called today. Apart from a tasteful slug in the corner not much else to comment on! One thing that is strange that even though someone has gone to the effort of designing a white background with rotating coloured blocks this background is being used ONTOP of the blue squares background!!!! Surely it would make more sense to use the white/squares background with the four squares ontop featuring the election related story and reverting back to the blue squares for non-election stories?
Mark Austin on the 18:30 and John Raey (sp?) on the 10:30 both walked through a virtual houses of parliament to present a similar item to SKY¦News.
So far, the BBC' s graphics have been the most acceptable. I like the way the ticker has a coloured heading depending on the party. The only bad thing to say is that there is extra screen clutter with the addition of an election 2005 X graphic in the top left corner - but otherwise it's all looking grand!

So a nice excuse to make some money from text messaging then, or am I being too cynical?
