Is it me, or does Orla Guerin always sound like the GRIM REAPER, the authority on doom and gloom.

Dead Ringers used to refer to her as "The BBC's Misery Correspondent" and have her read stories about balloons and bouncy castles whilst still making them depressing

The Kate Adie sketches were similar IIRC. I miss Dead Ringers.

It'll give them a ~500kbps data pipe, maybe even via the internet from Inmarsat to Sky - and they'll then use a video codec of some sort to squeeze the output of their (possibly HD) camera down the very narrow IP pipe.

If it was an HD camera they probably wouldn't have been feeding an HD output into the encoder and then onto the BGAN. The video quality coming out of those things isn't even SD.

Oh yes, I know - but some of the stuff Sky have been doing live on the BGAN has appeared later in HD - either by store-and-forward or uplinked once they got to the flyaway dish. The point I was (badly) making was that they're obviously recording in-camera in HD, but also broadcasting it live with a low-bandwidth sub-SD stream.

So - the BBC are gradually getting a much larger team in place, does this mean they'll start to overtake Sky, simply because they have so many more reporters, and can be in so many more places?

Feel free to expand this list if you know of any more BBC correspondents:
Rana Jawad - Tripoli
Daniel Sandford - Tripoli
Lyse Doucett - Tripoli
Orla Guerin - Tripoli
John Simpson - Tripoli
Wyre Davies - Tripoli
Rupert Wingfield-Hayes - Tripoli
Jon Leyne - Benghazi
Paul Wood - near Sirte
Jonathan Head - Misrata

Matthew Price no longer in Libya...

They've had more correspondents than Sky all along, just not doing the right things.

Seems they've all got there as people's interest is waning.

The only good thing is that Paul Wood is near Sirte, where it's likely to next kick off. And he's good.

We've just joined Sian Williams here on World, at approximately 13:07hrs LON. Peter Dobbie did the first seven minutes on the Nigeria Breaking News, before handing over to Sian for the Libya segment. Not really sure why they do that?

Sian lead with Libya from the top of the hour, so this segment must be recorded. It was a nice, succint package of lives, so I suppose it makes sense to use it for a global audience.

Aha. We now have a "Recorded Earlier" bug on the screen, even shown during the pieces where Sian is reading.

Are you seeing the first few minutes of the One? We've been onto different stories for a few minutes now.

Yes, it was clearly the recorded first ten minutes or so of The One. We're back now with Peter Dobbie, running again Nigeria UN blast.

EDIT: Finally got the vid to work. . . . but my comments were lost.

I was posting because it was an unusual theme for AJ. An extra 'chord' (is it called - I am not musical).

I know it was different, and certainly not just an extended version. Explain the music to me if I am being presumptive about a slight change in AJ's music.

Also: my TV doesn't cope well with 14:9 broadcasts. What is AJ broadcast mode in the UK? It's very annoying!!!!

Both the ident and the sting sound the same to me.

Al Jazeera broadcasts in 14:9. Shame they don't broadcast their full HD-ness.
