They mentioned earlier that it's via BGAN - that's a portable internet/satellite system. They'll have a flat fold out 'dish' that's sending the video back
Yes, but as I say it's mostly just luck. Another day it could have been Sky stuck in the hotel and the BBC in the square
YEA IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE OTHER WAY. THEY ARE LUCKY AT THE MOMENT.
Occasional lagging in picture and in quality. Sky are lucky to be getting these live and lsrgely uninterrupted. Is this fiotage being sent via mobile networks?

Wow, Matthew Price in hotel room. He is so behind the times it's unbelievable.

Earlier when the link went down we saw a screen briefly saying 'SKY NEWS Streambox 1' - unfortunately missed the opportunity to cap it. Not sure if it adds any info but thought it may be of interest!

I'm absolutely with you, it's just not a place you go to to find out the news any more. I have it and other news channels on in the background at work and it's definitely the one I refer to the least. And those African bank adverts, blimey!
I agree - when we first got Sky installed in 1995, CNN really was great. We didn't have the capability to receive BBC World back then and we used to love watching CNN for world news. It's such a shame how it's gone. It's completely lost the plot now.
I just remembered another irrelevant and incredibly self-congratulatory waste of time that fills a TOTH slot... BackStory! And iReport is a cop-out too - why both getting journalists to report when you can get Joe Bloggs to film something with his mobile?
I knew it was time to worry when all the presenters started reminding viewers that they're watching 'CNN - the worldwide leader in news'. It's almost as bad as Fox News's 'fair and balanced'
In my opinion, there's really only one international news channel that's worth watching these days and that's BBC World News.

The amount of live news on CNN now is shockingly poor. If BBC World can manage to have a full international news bulletin every hour, as well as regular business and sport updates, then I see no reason why CNN can't.

In fact Alex's use of BGAN has already made it to it's Wikipedia page (as if that's the only thing it's ever been used for!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband_Global_Area_Network
Here's a manual for the system they're probably using: http://www.groundcontrol.com/bgan/Using_Streambox_over_BGAN_EN.pdf
'Streambox' is software for streaming video over the internet, BGAN is a network which it can be used on. There's another similar system called 'Quicklink'

A thought of getting a big invoice from Sky in the morning would stop them! Of all the news organisations Sky are probably the most protective over their footage, and they certainly wouldn't want it being used by one of their 3 deadly rivals. It's not as if being promoted is a good deal, the majority of BBC, AJE and CNN viewers will not have access to Sky.
In some cases channels do just rebroadcast others when there are big stories, usually a national broadcaster. It's legally iffy, although often it will go under the defense of fair use
Is there anything stopping the BBC/CNN/AJE showing Sky's pictures from Green Square as long as they credit them? Would surely be better than the scenario on the BBC at the moment where they are showing daylight pictures from hours and hours ago.

One wonders if this really is the beginning of the end for the Colonel. I only have access to CNN where I am at the moment. But, knowing the particular area of the city well, I take my hat off to Alex Crawford and crew for having the balls to broadcast live from Green Square.
CNN coverage seems a bit too tame in comparison.
What's happening now on BBC World?

Yea that's the issue. Why pay sky when most people in the world is not watching them at the moment. BBC/CNN/AJI are in more homes then sky. Base on the coverage and consistence of the coverage from the past few hours I will say BBC WORLD and AJI are doing ok with what they have now
