CNN running pictures labelled 'July 13th'. Sums up their coverage tonight.

CNN also talking to correspondent in Cairo. Awful. Hala Gorani, as in past occasions I've seen her, is shouty and asks awful questions. I don't rate her.

Next, the BBC, given their huge news crudentials, aren't doing as well as they could do. They need more correspondents. PERIOD. Also if they can at least get something that Alex Crawford is doing, that would definitely improve coverage, although I understand (maybe not!) that no other journalists can enter Tripoli.

Sky News is by far the best at the moment, with Alex Crawford clearly giving information that every other station wishes they had

Even Piers Morgan is crediting Alex Crawford's work:

Quote:
I know I work for a rival network, but Alex Crawford's live reporting for Sky News from a rebel truck inside Tripoli is heroic journalism.

Babita on from 1 BST for continued coverage on BBC. Best website coverage has to be BBC with their live page. Sky News' page is woeful.

AlArabiya is in full scale 'breaking news' mode at the moment, and it only ever brands the studio like this in certain stories (the last time was the night Mubarak stepped down)

The pictures do the talking...

I am always astonished at how bad the Sky News website is - especially compared to the very good iPad app. A revamp must surely be in the works.

I can confirm that the 2300 hour is going out on BBC World as well as the BBC News Channel. I share the sentiments of other members in that the big guns should have been brought in by now, even if it is late on a Sunday evening. Adam Parsons and Adnan Nawaz are hardly known for their skill at anchoring big news events and asking tough questions etc. Matthew Price gave a good extended round-up of developments, but chose to stay within the relative safety of his hotel. I appreciate the situation is dangerous, but by all accounts Sky News's coverage has been more dramatic and engaging.

I haven't seen CNN this evening, but I really do have to question what the heck is going on at that organisation of late. They seem to be airing a lot of CNN US output on a daily basis, they've cut back on the number of live news programmes (for instance, World Sport, World Business Today and Quest Means Business ought to be back half hour fodder, not TOTH material - and how many editions of Piers Morgan Tonight do they really need to show in 24 hours?!) and they seem to rely on handing over to CNN US for breaking news a lot these days, even if it has nothing at all to do with the US. I can remember a time when they'd only hand over to CNN US when something major was happening in America and they would provide their own coverage of international breaking news. I didn't see any of their coverage tonight, but from accounts provided here, it seems like an appalling editorial judgement to hand over to CNN US, which wasn't even rolling with the news from Libya, nor did its presenters have the knowledge or capability to handle it!

CNN talking live to their reporter in the Rixos hotel who says the government minders and security have all left. Not to be flippant but surely that means that, if safe, he could go outside and report on what is happening in the city itself rather than inside the hotel?

Edit: I suppose perhaps I am being unfair, it could be very dangerous outside - although it didn't stop Alex Crawford.

AJE are now using 'Freedom Square' in their locator caption, I think they were the first to do the same in Egypt too.

Apparently the opposition are showing AJ to the crowds

Watching this report from the hotel makes the whole thing Alex's doing even more extraordinary and fascinating. These media people in the hotel seem distressed.

I must admit the same thing crossed my mind when the BBC's Matthew Price said the same thing nearly an hour ago. I appreciate Tripoli is a very dangerous and volatile place right now, but isn't a journalist supposed to be as near to the action as possible? I haven't seen Sky News so far but apparently Alex Crawford is in the thick of it so why aren't the BBC or CNN?

It's essential for them to get on the streets now, just nearing the quality of Alex Crawford's convoy round the streets is where they need to go. The BBC live page suggested another correspondent in the capital but can't be named. How many more Beeb people do we know are there? Jeremy Bowen/John Simpson should have been on to this story already!!

As for CNN, that channel just seems to be turning into a Piers Morgan fest. I detest that man!

How is Al Jazeera doing?

It seems like they can not leave this hotel cause there's a Gaddafi soldier downstairs and he seems angry.
