Delighted to see Eddie Mair presenting Newsnight, has this happend before?
Nice to see Eddie presenting BBC Two's flagship news show.
I would imagine that the BBC has better things lined up for the talented Eddie, I hope this isnt just a one off.
Yes, Eddie probably presented Newsnight about 4-5 times last year, and alongside Martha Kearney and Jon Sopel is the chief relief presenter if neither Jeremy, Gavin or Kirsty is available. From past experience, Eddie has a lot of fans on this forum, and while it is widely assumed that he is going on to bigger and better things, it is unknown whether they will be on radio and tv. But I for one would love to see him presenting the Six O'Clock News or Breakfast.

Breakfast could be good, though I reckon that he may be snapped up by Sky or ITV before long, he made news on BBC Three watchable and engaging.
Some of his asides were great -
The markets are down.... I know how it feels.
And the end of the report about Iraq (I think because someone they wanted to interview wouldn't come) 'But don't despair we've ....... our correspondent in America.
As has been said before, Eddie must be one of the candidates to replace John Humphreys on the Today programme when he hangs up his headphones.
I don't know how much we should read into this, but over the next week or so, while the regular presenters of the Today programme are on holiday, I suppose, there are several guest presenters including Tim Franks (Europe correspondent), Stephen Sackur (hardtalk) and Justin Webb (Washington correspondent).
No sign of Eddie. Does anyone know whether he has ever presented Today before?

I wouldn't read anything much into this - it is the summer holiday season - and so stand-in presenters are needed. Eddie is the main presenter of another Radio 4 programme (PM) - so is himself likely to need a stand-in to allow him to go on holiday?
I think that all of the stand-ins you mention are normally reporters rather than main presenters - so easier to "spring" for Today duties...
