What size are those monitors? I don't think Panasonic is still making the 103" monitors at NBH.

There's a chance they're not monitors I suppose, they could be printed photo blow ups. We'll have to see if they move! She does refer to them as back projector screens but that's possibly just because that's what they've always referred to them as (the previous set was back projection based)

I think the background will move, if you compare the small monitors in both images, they've got different images on them.

There is also a timelapse on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/bbc.emt

My only gripe is that the camera shots are mostly from the left rather than centred

I certainly love the main presenting area, especially the use of the NBH-style panel at the front of the rostrum. Also nice that it's now a real actual rostrum, rather than merely a naff imitation of the rostrum shape painted directly onto the flat floor.

Not so keen on the printed wall in the secondary area used for sports news etc. That particular bit of wall is either recycled from the previous set, or is at least of much the same ilk. Never liked it as a design choice before, and still don't like it now. It lets down an otherwise lovely set, IMHO. Shame.

Poor EMT has been rather the poor relation in terms of BBC regional news sets for ages. Needless to say that this is a vast improvement. Not that that's saying much. Letting a bomb off on the previous set would've been a vast improvement.

The abomination-against-humanity that was the washed-out projection screens were there for waaaaay too long. Did they first appear in the "ironing board" era, or before that? I wouldn't even say that they'd outstayed their welcome, as I wouldn't wish to imply that there was ever a single nanosecond that they ever were welcome.

Rather like South Today was guilty of at one time, EMT had rehashed and rehashed the same bare bones of set in-situ too many times and/or for too long. That said, I don't think it ever became anything like the train-wreck that the previous Southampton set eventually did (with all those little rectangular holes cut in it, to variously house little TV monitors/lightboxes/glass bricks (etc etc) over time. *shudders* People at BBC Southampton back then should've been arrested for crimes against set design.

That secondary area has definitely been reused based on the timelapse. It does feel a little low budget (the perspex curved thing in front of the coffee table looks a bit naff) and I'm not sure that seating position was intended - it looks like they've realised they can't get the camera angles they need by sitting the presenters in the middle. It's also a bit of a shame the monitors aren't really angled enough for them to be used as a graphic display in shot.

Other than that it's a vast improvement!

Is that why the male presenter isn't "camera-left" then? Wink

A pretty decent interpretation of the set though.

This might just be me, but I think there is too much red. I know that the BBC News colour is red, but the previous set did just fine with the coffee table and sofa having the colour.

Wow that sofa looks uncomfortable. The straight back looks like your back would be on fire after a few minutes. Well at least it forces them to sit up straight. Not very ergonomic. EEk. But then again Im not a fan of news presentation from a sofa.

I think they need to tone down the amount of red in the scenes on the plasmas, and maybe get rid of the pointless curved screen in front of the desk.

It's certainly a vast improvement on what they had before, but constructed at such an odd angle given the amount of space they have.

Furthermore, they've got 4 nice large plasmas, but made them look like light boxes.
