New set for East Midlands Today from Tuesday...

I wonder if it will be anymore radical than the last refresh. Let's hope so!

It has to be since they've finally removed that terrible low resolution rear projected screen, and everything else. Sofa or desk I wonder?

Can't see them going for a desk! But you never know. It's been at least 14 years since EMT had a proper desk

If they go for a sofa it will be interesting to see how they incorporate it into the mock-NBH studio look that the other nations and regions with a recent refresh (Spotlight, Newsline and SET) have gone for but with a desk.

They could probably fit something similar to London's set in that studio.

Possibly, it's not a bad sized space really. The old set was in at an angle, and obviously had all the rear projection screens, so that would have all taken up quite a bit of space.

Quite, and EMT were one of the first digital studios in the English Regions - with technology that's 18 years old nearly! So maybe there have been technical refits planned for the new set launch?

No. I'm told the plan is just to 'patch things up' at Nottingham, while the Beeb ponder the bigger picture regarding the infrastructure of all the English Regions. Plymouth may well turn out to be the last of the 'old school', or alternatively a trailblazer for the rest of the regions ! Money is short, and IP based systems are becoming hard to ignore, so if I were a betting man.......

Yes. Plymouth was also the first recent full in-situ upgrade, rather than a relocation (since the late 80s I think?), so probably quite educational in the challenges of staying on-air whilst upgrading.

Suspect the potential cost-savings of IP production are looking to big to ignore. The local radio VILOR model has been quite radical, but VRT in Belgium have been looking at something similar for TV. Radical and groundbreaking potentially, but also in current times radical may be the only solution. I seriously doubt the BBC can commit to upgrading all the existing SD regions to new HD set-ups using conventional approaches in the current climate. However given the increasing age of a number of the early SDI installs, some patching-up is required. I know some systems are being quietly replaced at the moment.

A tweet revealing quite a lot about the new East Midlands Today set:

That looks quite wonderful, is that the same Lightwell backdrop they started using in September?
