Another Earthquake in SUMATRA

Hi, can anyone tell me if the news channels are covering this?? I am not near a TV.

Sky have been Reporting from AP copy. No one else seems at all interested yet...

They've all mentioned it in the last 15 minutes or so (Sky, then ITV, then BBC, I think), but not enough information yet to judge whether it's going to be a big story or not.

They've all taken their breaking news straps off

BBC website is currently reporting no damage or casualties

The USGS site at http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/ has reported this:

Original earthquake - 6.8 on Richter scale, at Kep Mentawai Region, Indonesia.

At least 5 aftershocks measuring 5.8, 6.3, 5.5, 5.9 and 5.3 on the same scale.

The unfortunate reality is that there will be major earthquakes in the area for the next 2 years after the enormous shake on 26th Dec 2004. Hopefully the amount of thrust and shake will diminish over the months, but the plate tectonics need to settle and adjust to the new realities and stresses of the ocean floor.
