Yes Dermot is doing a very good job on the six. Nice pairing all week really, what with Jane and Sophie and always nice to see Darren make the six.
I do wonder if this is more than just cover for Geogre, possibly testing out partners etc...

Dermot on the 6 O'Clock News? Murnaghan? I thought when Murnaghan joined BBC News was because he fancied the role of breakfast TV presenter and "wanted to see my children go to bed" because he "wanted a change from the ITV Evening News" - both true remarks.
Dermot is a good newsreader but being with Kraplinsky is ruining his career. Make him a 1 O'Clock newsreader, or equally, put Kraplinsky onto BBC World.

I thought he was very good also - Alagiah watch out indeed.
Dermot has just the right tone for an early evening 'family' bulletin.

Oh no, dont inflict her ineptitude on the rest of the world, just shift her to a regional programme or fire her and be done with it! Smile

They'll say anything - Eamon Holmes was fed up of the early mornings... a few weeks later its announced he's to present Sunrise on Sky News.

I'd be surprised if he didn't want to move onto the Six or Ten, they are certainly more high-profile than their ITV rivals.

Didn't someone say that there would be a presenter shake-up in early 2006 when Anna Ford's contract ends??
Maybe, as you've said, they could just be trying out new pairings.
But, yes, I do think that Dermot is more suited to a main, national bulletin.

Think back to 1986 when the BBC poached Martyn Lewis from ITN when he was presenting News At Ten and sometimes News at 5.45. The BBC paid £100,000 for him to present the new One O'Clock News, within two years he was presenting either or both the Six O'Clock News and the Nine O'Clock News.

personal chemistry is the key to presenting a good quality show that people will watch - even if the format's a bit dodgy (BBC Breaskfast and repetition of items to fill airtime) Natasha and Dermot are both capable and experienced newsreaders in their own right but together have no chemistry and struggle to link items with a lighthearted appropriate banter - sometimes Dermot struggles and Natasha just 'freezes'. But presenting on her own of a weekend she is excellent and authoritive. I do think she'll be good on the 6pm as she doesn't have to interact with colleagues.

Pity the BBC have signed her to do a light entertainment show called 'Saturday Swingers'. Why does she do these shows if she wants to be seen as a 'serious journalist' - is it part of her contract as potentially by presenting these programmes she's putting herself up for a fall if the programme flops. Surely it's a big enough job doing breakfast. I'll watch it on the basis she's presenting it though as I think she's great !!
