What happened was as it was an NBC/MSNBC simulcast NBC ran out an ad break midway through Morgan Chesky’s report. So MSNBC decided to end it and I guess she expected them to cut to the anchor on before her. She came out about five minutes before the report for MSNBC (likely because she’s much more known than the relatively new to MSNBC anchor). I assume at the end she expected them to cut to the anchor. But with everything being run on a skeleton shift they cut back to her who obviously was frustrated as it was cut off. She comeback to anchor the 11 PM and 12AM hours. Once my computer finishes transferring and encoding everything (a ton of video from the space launch) I will try to make a side by side video of the two broadcasts.

I watched the special report on MSNBC and I remembered after they went to commercial break after the special report, they had brought up Joshua Johnson from the previous hour to take over coverage. Chris Jansing was just on air on the channel for around 20 minutes.

I assume Chris Jansing was anchoring from home and the gallery (control room) had problems with connecting to Chris' talkback, hence you heard some kind of device (I think it's a landline phone?) besides her "beeping" at the start of the special report. So they just brought on Joshua again in Studio 3A...

The start of the special report I found on YouTube and her device "beeping" that I was talking about:

She was coming from her home studio, later in the night she said something like “normally in New York you hear sirens of police, fire and EMS outside the windows behind me in my apartment”.

I imagine Chris was brought on solely for the special report, which is why she was on the air shortly before the report at 10PM. Normally they don’t hand over coverage in the middle of an hour unless it’s say the bottom of the hour. She took over at 9:55, no reason for Joshua Johnson not to finish out the hour if not for having Chris Jansing ready for the SR.

^ Unbelievable. This is happening in the USA. I’m constantly having to pinch myself to believe this.

These riots aren't new, they do happen from time to time and don't forget we had something here which seemed as unbelievable about 10 years ago. I think the real alarming thing is the apparent lack of leadership though.

I can see that journalists might be shot or arrested accidentally in the chaos of it all but most of these incidents seem like a deliberate attack on the media.

It really feels different to me this time compared to 6 or 10 years ago during the Michael Brown protests or Occupy. People feel more emboldened to criticize and attack "the media," and that includes people both on the left and the right. Trump's erosion of trust in the media isn't isolated to one side. What's also different to me is that there are public voices openly defending violence and looting, and I do think Trump has also emboldened many police departments to have a much more vicious response than they had before.

There's a lot of truth in what you're saying there. The media mistrust angle is one that has been deliberately generated by the right since 1994, and made worse over the years as the right has started only listening to their own media, which means a right wing bubble has been created, and as such, trying to reach into that bubble with something that isn't what they want to hear, just isn't possible anymore. Because of the growth of right wing media, you now have the reverse situation, where the left doesn't trust the right wing media. But there's a massive difference here. The right wing media constantly lies and only presents what their audience wants to hear. The rest of the media does its best to report accurately and fairly, letting the facts speak for themselves. But since the right hand side of the political divide no longer cares about facts, you get the "preachers only speaking to their own congregation" situation you have now.

At the risk of going political but I suspect Trump is actually welcoming the distraction from the Coronavirus death toll over there - suddenly that's become a secondary issue and sadly these riots and his rhetoric towards them will play well to the racists who got him into the White House.

Except in a week or two's time when I fear the number of new cases and deaths will surge again, based on the lack of social distancing in a lot of the protest footage.

But then it will be the protesters fault, not the administration, even if it rises in places that haven't been rioting.

I do love the new, over the top dramatic music MSNBC has started using for its top of the hour headlines.

Local D.C. stations are covering today's protest with rolling news. I've seen rolling content on ABC (Sinclair owned) and FOX, while the CBS station is surprisingly owned by Tegna, from when I watched were using rooftop shots as they did in Atlanta on "11 Alive" over the weekend.

There have been shocking, inexcusable examples of police mistreatment of the public in recent days. This is just one example:
