CNN, both domestically and internationally, have gone to great lengths to distinguish between 'Breaking News' stories and news 'Just In' over the past couple of years.
A 'just in' strap is used for fairly important events that merit mentioning, or when the situation is unclear. 'Breaking news' is reserved for ongoing coverage of a major news story.
Sky News used to quite regularly - up until the 2001 relaunch - use 'JUST IN' graphics in the top left of the screen... just a nicely shaded red square that would pop up there. There was even a 'breaking news' square that just sat there if the strap couldn't explain things properly. They were deployed in a pretty haphazard way, and often with no real consistency, but the recent relaunch saw and end to it.
I think they will have to think about introducing a special - smaller - newsflash strap when the relaunch comes around later this year. It is silly to continue as it is now.

A "Sky News Flash" is breaking news - they have that written in their slug when they have breaking news on screen.
It could be argued that Breaking News is news that's Just In etc etc - therefore all the definitions that you've given could be argued to be Breaking News.
I suppose they used the Breaking News strap on this occasion because a) It's the 25th Brits - something quite substantial and something they've been covering all day today; and b) They might be trying to capture a younger audience - although personally I can't see many 9 - 14 year olds watching Sky News at that time in the evening - if at all!
Yes, this story was a bit daft to say the least, but no matter how trivial the story was, it was still breaking news under the general definition accepted by Journalists and the public as a whole - i.e. Happening News - something that is happening right now, just in etc

But should this be called breaking news at all? Could it not be a 'Just in' or a 'Sky News flash'? Doesnt 'Breaking News' suggest a) something serious or quite important and b) something that has come to light that is likely to be a developing story?

I think that news channels need to account for all age groups. Most of the time when I watch and breaking news comes up, I don't really know much about what it says and couldn't care as well at times. I am however interested in the 25th Brit Awards and so are millions of other people throughout the country and I think the news channels need to account for all. Me personally got all my information from the BBC News website but a lot of people don't have access to the internet/don't want to go on it.

On a completely different slant, today's Daily Record carried a story about BBC Scotland apparently snubbing the Pope in favour of live football. Had the Pontiff passed away last week, the plan was to drop all programming and cut to BBC News 24. However, last Wednesday night BBC One Scotland were showing the Dundee Utd - Rangers cup tie, and had the Pope died during the match, BBC Scotland would have stuck with the game and told viewers the sad news at the end, rather than interrupt the broadcast!
Nice to know that our so-called "national" broadcaster has its priorities right......

almost right, one of them's from Bolton in Lancashire...
I've heard people call McFly a lot of things (an easy line for a reply there) line but not alternative rock.
All the proof you need to be convinced that I know bugger all about Alternative Rock and Pseudo-Rock! That's my brother's department....
I however, am more a Breakbeats, Trance, Funky House and Hard House Music specialist....

I freely admit I know bugger-all about alternative rock.... and why have they dropped the Best Dance Act category? To give people an excuse to start saying 'Dance music is Dead'?

Outstanding Contribution To Music: Robbie Williams, Angels
I'm not too sure if I agree with the first four words there, but never mind. I thought the Little Britain guys looked hilarious though, presenting the award to Robbie dressed as his old band mates Howard Donald and Gary Barlow:

I think I might even watch it now, just to see them!

OH
All News Channels have been showing the build-up to The Brits 25 with the main event being shown on ITV1 tonight.
I was flicking around the news channels last night and didn't see any breaking news straps on any of them. Did BBC News 24 and ITV News Channel also carry the results as 'breaking news' or did ITV News Channel refrain as they knew people would want to watch it 'as live'on ITV1?
PS - personally I don't reagrd the Mcfly award as breaking news - there are only a few categories of such callibre that would deserve such instant news - ie best single of the year, outstanding contribution..... etc

Just as well cos you've mis-quoted (or they made a mistake and have since corrected it), Bob Geldof got that award, Robbie got the 'Brits 25 best song award'.'
