Having met Ms Mackenzie, I must say she seems anything but miserable by day! She took part in News on Tour with vigour and much jollity - which is not in abundance at 1000 on a Saturday morning in Liverpool! I defy anyone to look cheerful during the graveyard slot, especially so early in the week!

I find her quite pleasing to watch. She is good at her job and does try to add a bit of warmth to the programme. As has been said its just a difficult slot to add personality.
The news isn't exactly breaking overnight; there aren't meany live interviews and rarely a studio guest. Because the programme is going out around the world (at peak times in regions) means it could be as much an important hour as the Six/Ten is to us. If it was only being broadcast in the U.K. she might come across differently. I always notice Alastair Yates is usually very chirpy at the half past summary only on N24, its a bit like grave shift radio where theres a 'its just me and you' atmosphere.
Deborah has done other work for BBC World Service as part of the BBC Proms which I'm sure would give more room to manoever. It's just a shame overnight is such a restrictive format.

Is Deborah Mackenzie from BBC News 24 one of the most misrable people on earth? Does this woman ever smile? Sometimes I have to change channel when she reads the News because she looks so depressed. Is it just me or am I right?
I've only ever seen James Ison look happier than this!

Actually I like her. I think her way of presenting the news is quite appropriate for her shift. And I also like her odd way of signing off: "BBC News". Clear and simple.

She signs off 'BBC News' simply because as she broadcasts simultaneously on both BBC News 24 and BBC World, she cannot refer to the specific channels. Therefore it is easier for her to refer to the generic BBC News.
