I can understand the "making of an example of Hussein"....but in the short term this can only inflame the violence in Iraq. How can that be a good thing?
But, on the other hand, it's too bad that Thatcher is an old lady now. If only she could protect Hussein like she protected Pinochet...
Saddam will be dead in the next 2 hours.
The dead bodies of his two sons were shown on TV - in the daytime as well. I think it is likely it will happen to Saddam as well.
The body itself will probably be shown - up to each broadcaster what they do there. But the hanging itself surely won't.
No its highly unlikely it will be shown. He'll be dead within the hour.
There is currently a
Larry King Live
special covering the events on CNN. They are predicting it to happen whilst they are on the air. Within the next few minutes...
News 24 have now devoted the last half an hour to this. Sky are dipping in and out.
Interesting to see that Aljazeera English are not covering this in much depth at all in comparison.
Just had a scary thought - not sure that it's intentional, but the timing of this hanging is almost a little too convenient for American primetime.
Surprised we haven't had special programmes so far at this point. Dipping in and out of such a major story seems surprising to me. It's a major world event, I'm surprised the A-listers aren't back to present it.
They're saying they don't know where the execution is taking place. Nonsense, they'll just have been embargoed.

breaking news: Saddam executed
Just to let you know we have live coverage of the hanging on SixHits, listen live on www.sixhits.com
Another point on media coverage, I'm surprised Radio 5 Live are going with usual programming until such times as the hanging takes place. They were going on about South American football the last time I heard. The BBC World Service are also continuing with their regular programming.
BBC News 24 will have an awkward opt-in point at 3am to let BBC World rejoin them. Hats off though to the Euronews guy who's possibly got the trickiest job - a disembodied voice probably translating a French script and clinging on until such times as the hanging is confirmed.

The timing has to do with a muslim religious festival which takes place from 6am Iraqi time - hence they want him dead before it. They cannot kill in this festival apparently, which ends at the start of January and I suspect they want to start 2007 with Saddam dead.
Strikes me as leaving it a little last minute if their only aim is to avoid coinciding with a religious festival. There's presumably no reason why this hanging could not have taken place hours ago.
