With the death of the former Prime Minister now imminent, how do you think television will cover the events? Will programmes be interrupted? And what sort of coverage will they give to the State Funeral? Will it be David Dimbleby or Huw Edwards presenting for the BBC?
This thread is for discussion of the upcoming news story.
Is this thread really needed?! I was shocked for a few moments then until I realised that she hasn't actually died yet.. contrary to the title of this thread.

Agreed. A thread about how broadcasters might cover future deaths of former Prime Ministers and/or members of the Royal family might make interesting discussion, but the thread title and focus on Mrs Thatcher seems somewhat inappropriate.
Amended thread title. I just think it'll be interesting and as sad as it may be, it's probably not far off. I'm sure we had threads like this before the Queen Mother died.
The Ghost of Thatcher will be a phrase which takes on a new meaning when she finally goes. I won't be mourning her loss when the day comes...
Oh come on, you may have disagreed with her policies, but she was the Iron Lady of politics, first female prime minister, a great character of strength, more strength than say dithering Brown ever showed. The Americans certainly have a wider respect for the woman regardless of politics compared with some people in this country, because of her strength and independence. She really started a new chapter of British politics. Shame really that some people let their personal views get in the way and dismiss how important she was in UK democracy.
She was a woman - big deal. So are 50% of the rest of the country. Equality doesn't mean we can excuse the damage she did to the country - she is judged purely and solely on her being a Primeminister and what this country went through under her watch. Whether or not she's male or female is a complete irrelevance.

Fair point, so why did the media make a big deal out of Obama being Black then?
Its important to remember the context and history of women in politics, for example its only recently since they've been allowed to vote. How many female MPs were there in politics prior to Thatcher compared to now? I think she changed the political landscape, regardless of whether you believe she damaged the country or not! So did Blair, will he not get morned when he dies?!

Saddam Hussain could be described as a strong leader who at one point had respect from America, doesn't mean what he did for/to the country and it's citizens was for the good.
When does strong leadership equal good leadership? In my opinion, she earned her place in the history books, but her legacy is not a good one, and it is something we are still dealing with. Business, Greed and Profit brought us to our knees, and it was under Thatcher and then Blair that this continued. The only positive with Blair is that the neglected public services received investment and improved.
