Trevor McDonald is a glaring omission here!

As much as he is lauded generally, I always found Trevor vastly overrated as a newsreader/caster. His delivery was often robotic in style, and certainly not in the same league as some of the names mentioned above for me anyway.

He worked his way up the ranks as a journalist, has won numerous awards, and was knighted for services to journalism. He was, and probably still is, one of the most recognisable voices in television news. I don't think he's overrated at all.

I do think with the world of 24 hours news channels we have today it is harder to be an 'anchorman' than it previously was as you do need to deal with lighter stories as well as hard-hitting news stories.

That's right, and related to it is the fact that in the old days of three / four channels, over 10 million people would get their news from each of the main ITN and BBC news programmes. It is similar to the fact that there won't be massive national names such as Frank Bough or Dickie Davies presenting sport, or more so, a rugby league commentator (Eddie Waring) being a huge nationally known celebrity.

I read that weekend news on television was very limited during the 60s, 70s and 80s. On a Sunday in say 1979 the first news bulletin of the day on BBC One would be at 2pm and on ITV at around 6.00pm - this was the era where weekend newspapers reigned supreme, along with radio for news at weekends.

ITN had a bulletin on Sundays at 12:01, at the start of LWT's Weekend World

Saturdays there was one at 1pm ish on both channels during Grandstand and World of Sport
