Never really understood how being culture secretary prepared you for being health secretary.

To be fair all cabinet reshuffles puzzle me, at a moments notice you have a completely different brief.

Imagine if that happened in other jobs

Accounts, you’re now doing HR. HR you’re now in Marketing..

Apparently the UK is one of the few countries where cabinet members have to be taken from the pool of elected representatives.

Elsewhere they can just recruit people from outside government who are experts in that field (or in the case of the US at the moment, those who are directly opposed to that field!)

One advantage of that is that they're not having to juggle both their cabinet job and their constituency

True about the US but it’s a lot of the time it’s current or politicians who made it their beat, specialized it in congress and became known for it or when your in congress on various committees
It’s kind of like a journalist (over here) beat where they typically specialize in one subject - like medicine, religion or transportation. You may not have a degree in it but you learn about it as you go on. One example I learned that Ben Bland studied law at Cambridge (I assume he’s a lawyer and interned overhere on Capital Hill (I tried asking who he interned for but no response)), did politics at BBC Essex but is now a Business Reporter that also presents general news.

What I find more interesting is that a full 24 hours after Boris quit he hasn't uttered a single word publicly, other than the letter that was released. Whereas Davis was all over the media being interviewed yesterday by TV and radio.

What tends to have a bigger news impact is a former Secretary of State making their fist speech in the Commons following their resignation, which traditionally has to be listened to in silence by other MPs. I suspect we will see special coverage for these from Davis & Johnson.

What finally did for Thatcher in 1990 was Geoffrey Howe making such a speech. He had also resigned over matters with Europe. His speech included the following very cutting cricket simile on her negotiating skills:
Quote:
It is rather like sending your opening batsmen to the crease, only for them to find, as the first balls are being bowled, that their bats have been broken before the game by the team captain.

I saw it be said somewhere that Davis wont be giving that type of speech - when he next speaks in the commons it will be a pure policy speech within a debate and not a personal statement.
