I'm just not terribly convinced with putting a programme that is based purely on opinion in the set from the news - the "facts" - are presented. I'm concerned either that the news set, from which facts are presented, lends weight to these opinions; or that the presentation of sometimes extreme opinions can undermine the integrity of the presentation of news. Perhaps most people wouldn't think twice about it, but I still don't think that a whole programme of opinion should be presented from behind a news desk. It may not be reported as news, but there's still just something *wrong* about it for me.

Lets just hope they don't cut budgets further and force the BBC to do a Fox, and make opinion come out of same mouth as the facts!

I didn't quite manage to get up in time to see Dateline this morning, and only caught a little bit of it on quarter-screen Parliament this afternoon.

It occurred to me though that there have been occasions in the past when breaking news has meant Dateline wasn't broadcast live, but recorded as live in its usual slot, and repeated later on in the day.

What's going to happen in this kind of situation now? Will News 24 have to decamp to N6 for the duration, or simulcast with World? Or will Dateline be moved elsewhere, or cancelled? (surely this would mess up World and Parliament's schedules.. I can't see the Millbank engineers being happy with that)

Also, where are the 10 minute 1100 summary and 1130 headlines presented from now? Does Gavin present these, or do the regular presenters do them from the summary area? I assume that Dateline still goes out live..

Unfortunately I missed it yesterday morning too, but I'd imagine they did the same thing that they do at 2230 prior to Business Today; that is, presenting the news from the stand-up summary area to the left of the set.

The new Dateline London titles are bloody horrible. I thought it would be impossible to top the horror of Straight Talk's title visuals, but they've actually done it. And it really doesn't work in the N24 set at all. I appreciate the budgetary advantages of sharing with an active set, and saving on having to activate another set at another location, but I'm not convinced by this at all.

Would it not be practical to, for example, use an area at BBC LONDON? Or the same area used later on for The Politics Show's London opt?

The news room does seem to have removed the debate feel from the programme.

Yes, I felt that too. At Westminster, they pulled that curtain around the back of the set to diffuse the newsroom behind. That worked much better. Now that you can see the newsroom, as BBC LDN said, it confuses fact and opinion.

Don't even get me started on the set! N8 is brilliant for News 24, but for anything else, it's very cramped. The quality of Dateline London was reduced by having fewer guests, due to set logistics, and when Breakfast moves there next year, it is going to be very cramped indeed.

Philip Hayton presented from the area with the screen where the TOTH and sport are done (and had a large printer in front of him which could be seen on screen. Looked terrible but probably so he can get updates on the Pope printed). I'm guessing this is where they would do it for 10 mins if it was a normal day (DL was delayed 'til 1130) and either have the sports there too or in the summary area.

Couldn't they move DL into N6 and change the backdrop like they do for HardTalk or they did for the BBC One Tsunami Special? Surely this would be easier, although difficult to squeeze so many guests round that desk, and use N6's technical crew?

Philip was actually in the larger 'stand up' area to the right with the big screen behind him. However, he did have the 'luxury' of a stool to sit on as well. Needless to say he looked extremely uncomfortable. A much tighter 'head and shoulders' shot was also used (compared to the usual framing for that part of the set).

EDIT: Cummig20 just beat me to it!

How many people would you get round it though? 3 at a push. Move head 2 head into N6 Very Happy Makes sense. Just have a black background Wink
