If you want to save money start by axing BBC Three and replacing it with a low cost repeat channel where the best of the BBC is repeated.

Have you ever heard of UKTV? You know, all those channels on which the best of the BBC is repeated?

And where would the *fab* 7O'Clock News show go, if BBC 3 were to become a repeats channel?

Will it survive anyway?

Is this move a financial saving one? I wouldn't have thought that the Westminster studios have much going on in them on a Sunday morning.

Most likely. They're also going to axe Business Today and move Breakfast out of TC7 to N8 (N24) from next year.

That's interesting. Whilst they are going to extend business coverage on BBC World from next week, they are going to cut it down on News 24.
Will Business Today be replaced by an edition of WBR or will there be no replacement at all?

This is a complete guess here. But they could be planning to simulcast the 21:30 World Business Report on News 24 as well as World.

I think the idea is to do away with the back-half hour programmes (of which Business Today is one) so that News24 actually offers something close to 24 hour news... although, cost cutting clearly had something to do with the decision. Doubt they'd simulcast 'World Business Report' - totally different content and target audience.

I actually forgot of it possibly being axed - what's the latest on the situation?

Don't tell me - tell him! I was making the point that the BBC already has repeats channels, and they are UKTV. I don't want to see BBC THREE go any more than you do. There's some fantastic stuff to come out of it, like Little Britain, The Smoking Room, Body Hits, Casanova, Nighty Night, Monkey Dust, and of course the excellent BBC THREE News. Of course, there's crap like High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman - but every channel spits out some shít from time to time. BBC THREE really needs a bigger budget to nurture new talent and develop new series, and really excel at what it was originally designed to do. If it's "failing" at the moment, it's because it doesn't have enough money to realise its potential; and hopefully some of the cuts being made elsewhere will avail more resources to make it a greater success.

But we digress. Back to the main discussion.

Sorry - was being slightly *lazy* when i just quoted from your comment.

Back to Dateline related stuff - is Milbank being overhauled for the election or not. Can they not afford to - or can they just afford to pay mediocre newscasters vast ammounts of cash *cough*Kaplinsky*cough*

Not really, it's virtually the same, just a different set and two additional UK reports.

A similar format to the 5.30am edition to WBR would likely be adopted if there was a simulcast. During the BBC World ad-breaks there would be a forced opt-out for all advertising regions and during this time you would have UK orientated business news.

Essentially you would end up with the same programme just from a different studio.

Well the new titles are great in my opinion. Very nice indeed.

Yes very nice indeed... although they could of had another guest... that gap in the middle didnt look right

The gap in the middle was due to the location of the printer between the two presenters.

Well it could be moved, but its not the sort of thing you can just wheel in and out. Its got to be set up correctly.

The new Dateline London titles are bloody horrible. I thought it would be impossible to top the horror of Straight Talk's title visuals, but they've actually done it. And it really doesn't work in the N24 set at all. I appreciate the budgetary advantages of sharing with an active set, and saving on having to activate another set at another location, but I'm not convinced by this at all.

Would it not be practical to, for example, use an area at BBC LONDON? Or the same area used later on for The Politics Show's London opt?

I'm just not terribly convinced with putting a programme that is based purely on opinion in the set from the news - the "facts" - are presented. I'm concerned either that the news set, from which facts are presented, lends weight to these opinions; or that the presentation of sometimes extreme opinions can undermine the integrity of the presentation of news. Perhaps most people wouldn't think twice about it, but I still don't think that a whole programme of opinion should be presented from behind a news desk. It may not be reported as news, but there's still just something *wrong* about it for me.

The news room does seem to have removed the debate feel from the programme.
