ITV first to be live from the scene - so much for rolling news channels!

You would expect ITV Border to have the nearest truck though. The nearest BBC truck is probably in Newcastle.

They have journalists at the scene (various ones from the BBC) however its probally taking alot longer to setup a live video link

Is Cumbria part of the Granada region? Their main headline during the opening to the News at 10.30 wasn't the crash.

NWT were using the BBC exec interview seemingly filmed off air from N24, with the picture zoomed into a fuzzy Cumbria map to cut off N24's graphics.

Martin Lewis on News 24 states 8 carriages went over, only the rear-most is still on the line. He said press briefings were going to take place at Kendal but he has been unable to get away from where he is because of blocked roads.

In these circumstances is there any precedent for BBC/Sky offering to pay in return for getting use of the crew and/or truck briefly in order to gather some images they can use on a loop until their own teams arrive?

Mark Simpson was talking to Huw before, possibilly he's attending the press centre now.

Never heard of Martin Lewes though, must be freelance.

BBC NWT covers Lancashire and Cumbria but ITV Granada Reports represents some of lancashire, if not all and greater manchester. They have various ones at Manchester, possibilly at BBC Radio Cumbria as well as Peter Holland is based there yet creates news packages/reports for BBC NWT.

Pre-ITV NC, the ITV regions regularly supplied pictures to Sky News. I think it was Mannion who cracked down on it when he returned to ITN.

(2) It strikes me that this whole 'send us your pictures' thing is ultimately pointless given that anyone who is caught up in it is highly unlikely to be anywhere near a TV (or at least get home/to safety until after a camera crew has had a chance to arrive). You're really relying on people there who've got the number programmed into their phone. I can't really imagine the first thing concerned relatives say when they speak to a survivor is, quick, take a photo and send it to Sky / News 24 - but perhaps they do..

It's not just people caught up in the incident though, those living nearby or passers by/drivers in the area at the time. A good example is Potters Bar - a built up area with houses overlooking the scene. The first images of the crash were from photographers in teh area

Jane Little - another BBC reporter at the scene.

Edit: Granada Reports featured it and had some moving images of the scene.

Southern Cumbria is Granada, but Whitehaven and above is Border.

Martin Lewes I'm sure reported down the line for NWT once before, at the scene of a boating/canoeing incident that was breaking when NWT went on air.
