BBC already speculating that there's a problem with Pendolino trains. DON'T PANIC! ARGHHHH! Rolling Eyes

Fair dues though, they have been in a different league to Sky on this one.

No they're not. She asked if Virgin will be checking their trains for any possible problems. They have also covered objects on the line, broken rails, travelling too fast etc.

News 24 is already way ahead on this. It's been an hour or more since this happened so pictures shouldn't be far off.

I think the line is next to the M6 so I'm sure it won't be long before speculation turns to a vehicle on the line.

The main reason I think the Beeb is ahead is because they have local teams there from Radio Cumbria, BBC Cumbria and North East and Manchester is just down the road on the M6, where the BBC have a lot of resources. Sky is primarily London based, which means it will take longer to get teams on the scene.

It's not as quick, unless you're going at 120Mph, from Manchester to that part of Cumbria it's at least 2 hours. Radio Cumbria is the nearest I would have thought.

Has anything been mentioned on the terrestrial channels? I've been watching Channel M since 9pm and they've mentioned it as it passed through Wigan earlier in the evening.

...after the guy on the phone basically told her to stop getting ahead of herself.

Do BBC Look North (Newcastle and Cumbria) have camera crews in Kendal- equally the ITV Border area?

I was thinking more camera crews and proper TV News reporters. I'm sure they would have sent reporters from Radio Cumbria in Barrow-In-Furness to there, who would have arrived within the hour, and from Carlisle which should be there within the hour, but possibly longer.

Well done to the Beeb on this occasion, although I'm pretty sure a lot of it was a bit of a fluke. It's not often that they have good presenters who can deal with this on, a calm and measured sensible employee as an eyewitness, and local news crews nearby. However, it certainly seems pretty textbook coverage so far - and the new graphics haven't fcuked up yet either!

I'm not going to bash Sky as they often trump BBC News, but they always seem to have trouble when anything happens in the north of England or Scotland. I just guess that's the risk they take when deciding where to locate their resources.

From what I can gather from the BBC, it's just before it runs alongside the M6, somewhere around the centre of this map (circled is Grayrigg). The BBC radio reporter said it was at a place called Little Docker Cottage.

BBC broke this with a strap at 20:35 by the way (I went back to watch it as I'd recorded that half hour for NewsWatch which obviously hasn't aired). The Breaking News email went out at 21:09.

This *was* the traintracker page. It was showing that it had not passed a point between Oxenholme and Penrith. Around 21:55 the details disappeared as by then it would have arrived at Glasgow. National Rail put details of changes to services here

(1) There's been at least one person from the BBC on every UK train crash I can remember for the past few years.

(2) It strikes me that this whole 'send us your pictures' thing is ultimately pointless given that anyone who is caught up in it is highly unlikely to be anywhere near a TV (or at least get home/to safety until after a camera crew has had a chance to arrive). You're really relying on people there who've got the number programmed into their phone. I can't really imagine the first thing concerned relatives say when they speak to a survivor is, quick, take a photo and send it to Sky / News 24 - but perhaps they do..

(3) 6 carriages (I believe) only 1 derailed and apparently only 100 people on board - seems it could have been much worse.

To be fair with the "send us pictures thing" the public hasn't sent N24 any but a BBC employee who was on the train...

I also notice this on the yourpics section: When taking photos or filming please do not endanger yourself or others, take unnecessary risks or infringe any laws.

N24 isn't going to the nationals for the 10.

The BBC were quite good at changing their whole rota of headlines for the BBC. They were quick at digging a picture up of their executive, being interviewed life on BBC 10'o clock news.

Yep N24 will probally stay off the nationals so they can gather more infomation on air ..
