How did you determine that, from looking at the TV images, or by closely examining the wreckage at the scene ? Have you any idea of the forces involved with crashing hundreds of tonnes of train, and contents at 90 mph. I take it you're not familiar with Newton's laws of dynamics for starters !

I am aware of such forces, but I'm also aware of the build up of the train. It's a very modern train which is designed to withstand crashes, and from looking at the TV footage alone, it is clear that the train is still in a good state. Also, reports from Virgin Trains do suggest that it will be back in service.

I take it Mark that you've been studying at the Joe Harvard school of physics recently and therefore you know exactly the damage that has occurred to this particular train.

With the mass of the train, and the speed involved, it's very likely the chassis of every carriage is bent. As with a motor car, if that's happened the vehicle is a write-off.

Ah but that is generally an insurance write off (It cost more to repair than the cars worth, not that its unfixable) I suspect these things cost a fortune and it would be cheaper to repair than buy a new one...

I am probably being really slow here (as ususal) but did the windows shatter when it went down the embankment? The footage of the immediate aftermath (survivor's camera phone pics) on Sky News shows broken windows; however, I thought none of the windows shattered during impact??
Sorry if this seems an incredibly stupid question!

I'd imagine people smashed windows to get out/in? Reports did say that none of the windows shattered at the time of the derailment.

It'll be emergency backup power. There are no 3rd rails anywhere outside of the South East

Merseyside excepted.

Also parts of Leicstershire for testing of New Underground rolling stock.

That would the Asfordby Line, which terminates at Plumtree, Notts. Co-incidentally where the Virgin Pendelinos were first tested.

Would be interesting to see how overseas broadcasters are reporting this... I've not seen Fox News reporting on it (apart from during the breaks when the news headlines are provided by Sky), CNN have been reporting on it though with correspondents from ITV - and I noted one caption spelling the Cumbrian town as "Kendall".

News.com.au are reporting it as "One Killed in London Train Crash" (!)

I wouldn't expect the incident to get much coverage by overseas news, to be honest - looking on other websites like CNN.com, it's not even amongst the top stories - any more than I would expect a similar train crash in Germany to get a huge amount of coverage here.

.

Well the train crash in India the other week got a reasonable amount of coverage, although IIRC there were more fatalities on that one

It was a much bigger international story because it was a terrorist bombing of a train
