The driver no doubt will be injured but the crumple zones at the front of the train should suitably protected him (to a degree).

Would be interesting to see how overseas broadcasters are reporting this... I've not seen Fox News reporting on it (apart from during the breaks when the news headlines are provided by Sky), CNN have been reporting on it though with correspondents from ITV - and I noted one caption spelling the Cumbrian town as "Kendall".

I'll let you know how it's reported this side of the Irish Sea.

Interesting how she said "And now on News 24..." before introducing the programme - are World staying with the Press Conference? When it's of more relevance to Britons?

Sky didn't carry the briefing at all, however, they were live on the scene speaking with a reporter. Now they're playing out the series of interviews from earlier all over again.

On the radio side of things, just tuned in to local station Lakeand Radio who are currently LIVE giving updates and providing the latest information on their website, sounds like they're playing a toned down playlist as well... meanwhile Radio Cumbria are with 5 Live...

A Virgin spokesman has said to Sky News that they have "no plans" to withdraw Pendolino trains from service following the derailment.
