Interesting to compare N24 to Sky's 15-minute wheel in covering tonight's train derailment.

Obviously N24 had the advantage of having BBC exec Caroline Thompson on the train and able to give a comprehensive commentary, but one can't help thinking that in the past Sky would have rolled with the story and had passengers, nearby farmers, local journalists, police etc on the line pretty sharpish, as well as the usual rail safety rent-a-quotes.

Of course it's debatable how useful such rolling speculation is, but it's odd to see such a story confined to the bottom of the screen on Sky whilst they carry on with the usual stuff.

Unbelievable.

I'm not a N24 or Sky partisan (and I wouldn't write off Sky based on one story) but the BBC are miles ahead of Sky News on this story tonight.

Things have certainly changed. Sky used to excel at coverage of this sort of thing.

Excellent coverage in the early minutes of this news story- of course the BBC have taken an early march on this due to Caroline Thompson being on board.

How quick till live pics in wonder- it's very isolated there.

The next 48 hours is going to be a little bumpy for Sky News, as they are off-tape in order to prepare for Sunday evening's graphic changes.

I do always worry a bit when the first thing a channel puts up is a "send your pictures of X to news@y.com".

The BBC were first with a mobile phone picture from the train

Plus a Radio Cumbria reporter in-vision from Carlisle - whose sister was on the train

Sky still only got Allan King talking over a map and appealing for people to email.

I'm suprised Sky News haven't put there Live coverage on the website yet.

They haven't got any coverage of the story worth streaming on the web.

Some "yourpics" on N24 now at the moment... Edit: And it seems a Beeb employee was on the train too, probably why they knew about it first.

The main reason I think the Beeb is ahead is because they have local teams there from Radio Cumbria, BBC Cumbria and North East and Manchester is just down the road on the M6, where the BBC have a lot of resources. Sky is primarily London based, which means it will take longer to get teams on the scene.

BBC already speculating that there's a problem with Pendolino trains. DON'T PANIC! ARGHHHH! Rolling Eyes

Fair dues though, they have been in a different league to Sky on this one.
