Let’s not all have a collective wet dream over this. Yes they’ve done a great job with limited resources and yes the relighting is effective, but the combination of the Newsnight colours with the harsh red of the fixed elements is horrible. And that’s not to take away from the work that’s been done to move into studio E under difficult circumstances, because they’ve absolutely done the best they could, but the standard setup in their normal studio is infinitely better.

It’s just wonderful to see such a creative use of Studio E, I am still amazed

Silly question but is it just E at NBH that has robotic cameras or is it all the studios? Could that be a key reason for the change.

It’s not a silly question. There are two robotic systems in use in NBH.

Studio E and C have Furio mounted cameras that are on tracks. Operated by a mixture of Mosart and an operator in the gallery (for some shows.)

Studios A and D have Shotoku robotics - a mixture of robotic heads (pan, tilt, zoom and focus) and fully robotic pedestals (which additionally have height adjust and can move around the floor)

Studio B has a mixture of Shotoku heads and fully manual camera pedestals.

Studio B isn’t mothballed as such - that term I think has much more of a semi permanent tone. It’s just not being used at the moment to save on staff.

I personally thought Newsnight looked great in E. A really top job done by the team in an incredibly short amount of time.

E certainly looks good with Newsnight branding. However, I wonder if they would have been able to achieve anything resembling the former 'very dark blue' look used under Ian Katz? That used to make Studio B look like a badly lit funeral parlour. Shocked

I’m glad - despite these hard and unprecedented times - Emily Maitlis is still managing to have her traditional Babycham before the broadcast. Normality in small measures, but still.

Just a question: if on-duty media practitioners are not exempted from the 'stay at home' order and present the news from their homes, then how or where are the galleries controlled from?

KRIV - FOX 26 Houston - Like many other big city stations are prepping disaster plans. KRIV set up a back up broadcast site from their transmission towers 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston. Apparently according to Newscaststudio they also have a small news prep/newsroom. Last week WBBM - CBS 2 Chicago practiced abandoning the CBS Chicago Broadcast Center.

Public Service Broadcasting is exempted.

Is there a Cyc rail in front of the window into the newsroom? I wonder if there might be an opportunity to either put up a gauze similar to the one they used to have in Millbank for emergency use to blur the newsroom a bit?

NBC's London News room is starting to produce a bit of "Global" content. Not sure how long this has been going but they now produce a global COVID19 Update produced out of London by a London based correspondent. Of course this was produced from this home. It will be interesting to see how these people will be transitioned into the NBC Sky World News

Anybody who can't do their job from home is allowed to go to their place of work.

There are no specific provisions for 'broadcasting' (public service or otherwise), but journalists (and those supporting journalism) are designated 'key workers' - all this means (right now) is that they can take their kids to the schools that are still open and maybe park in one or two places where others might get fined.

Broadcasters have chosen to have some of their talent present from home... but that's largely due to a) an abundance of caution or b) optics - (delete as appropriate). But that's choice over requirement.

I think it's probably more accurate to say it was presented from his home - I don't think we can assume the production team who produced it and packaged it were there too.
