Last night's News at Ten was on at the same time as the Love Island final, and when they talked about the show, they said the result hadn't been announced yet, "if you're wondering why we haven't mentioned it". As if anyone watching cared? Surely people who wanted to know who won the show would be watching Love Island and not the news?

Well yes. It's the same when there's a big football match on and the news reports on it - anyone interested will be watching the match
That's different, because most of the time that football is on Sky or BT. If you're interested but don't have the channel to watch it on and can't go to a pub that's screening it...

Whereas everyone has access to ITV2.

On that subject I thought it was quite questionable that Radio 2 were leading with Love Island on their bulletins yesterday, specifically the inquiry into reality TV associated with it. Now that's the sort of thing I'd expect Newsbeat to lead on, but as sick as we all are of Brexit I did think there was quite a bit of actual news yesterday which should have been considered more important to the nation than a few reality TV stars getting a bit of extra councilling so they don't get too upset by some mean tweets.

One of the problems of having a generic radio bulletin for commercial radio is that some stories are banal. I was listening to the male skewed Union Jack radio station at 1am last night and heard Love Island as the final story. I'm not sure if the station's largely blokey audience really care about an ITV2 reality show that targets women.

I'm amazed any commercial station has a news bulletin at 1am in the morning. I thought they were only required through to 7pm.

Same happens when football is on terrestrial opposite a news bulletin... or if Wimbledon meant the Six was moved to BBC Two, they’d still report live from Wimbledon during the bulletin!

That would presumably be an IRN bulletin rather than one specifically for that station?

My understanding Sky itn available on the hour every hour 24/7 and as a sustainable news feed if anything big happens, some use it and then put their own headlines next to it, some replace it with their own news. different stations have different contracts with Sky irn , so different policies etc

A few months ago I had to drive very early on a Sunday morning and was surprised to hear a Sky News bulletin on Absolute Radio at 5:00am. It was unusual as you don’t hear Sky News being referenced, as most of the bulletins are read by Absolute newsreaders and reporters are often quoted as ‘our reporter XXX’, even though they are Sky’s reporters.

There are two providers of news to commercial and community radio stations.

Sky News Radio, based with the main Sky News operation, they have the Independent Radio News (IRN) contract.
RadioNewsHub, based in Leeds provide a cheaper alternative which are taken by community stations and some small scale commercial stations.

You also have ‘Globals Newsroom’ which provide global stations with news. They take some audio from sky but I don’t think they take Sky News/IRN directly.

Global have a major share in IRN.

To be fair, "Global's Newsroom" don't sell their airtime to other groups, although Communicorp take their bulletins as part of their franchise deal to take Global brands on their licences.

Bauer also have an in-house operation that uses Sky copy and even little Radio Jackie has an in-house newsroom that uses the same copy.
