CNN Money Switzerland

The CNN Branded channel launches on the eve of the Davos summit in Switzerland from their Zurich. So far it looks fairly decent. Not a fan of the brick walls of the set. The graphics are similar to CNNi. The lower thirds use the same CNN font and the Logo animation just using the CNN money blue colours.

Interesting to see that is where Hannah Moffat, now Hannah Wise, ex Look North Hull, is now

(Don't want to go too off topic, but there are a few Look North Hull 'alumni' now working in international news. Jenny Hill as the BBC's Berlin Correspondent, Siobhan Robbins at Sky who I think is now based in Asia and was in Washington a bit last year, and Sarah Corker who works for BBC World News in London)

Quite surprised there is enough demand to justify this in Switzerland.

Interestingly, this isn't the first English-language business news venture to be based in Switzerland. The European Business Channel broadcast from the country in the late 1980s, but that was a pan-European service:



It went out of business (no pun intended!) in 1990.

Demand is notoriously difficult to predict in television, especially before a new venture is up and running. (There was no widespread public "demand" for 24-hour television news before CNN launched, for instance.) That's why so many channels go bust -- while others find their market niche and thrive.

For the record, I'm also skeptical about this service.

I won't be surprised if CNN Money launches on Zattoo soon.

Hmm. CNNfn wasn't exactly hugely successful in their own country, so I wonder how popular this will be.

CNNfn was up against CNBC when CNBC was, in my view, at it's absolute best. It was always gonna be difficult. and CNNfn was US exclusive, it had no international exposure on CNNI, and CNBC was already worldwide at that point.

CNNMoney right now is a global brand appearing on CNNI, and thus has a better chance of establishing itself slowly, over time. I believe they also have local partners for these channels, like they do with CNN Philipines and CNN Turk.

Yes, CNNMoney Switzerland was founded and is run by CNNMoney Switzerland SA, an independent and privately owned Swiss media company.
