NBC News announces that Chelsea Clinton is to become a "Special Correspondent" for the channel.

Begs the question: what qualifications does she have? Is she a qualified journalist? Genuine question. If not, what makes her a good candidate to be a "Special Correspondent"?

Of course she's there thanks to her name, and don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise. But you could argue she's got an amazing insight on what lives like for the president of the United States, more so than any other reporter.

Great. But how does that make her a journalist?

In fairness, until very recently there was no such thing as a "qualified journalist", you worked your way into the business as a jobbing reporter and eventually (if you were lucky) made your way up. Journalism courses at universities are pretty much a recent event, until recently the only one in Ireland was at DCU, I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Nothing can make you a journalist. Either you are or you're not.

It just helps that Chelsea Clinton has a wealth of financial and political experience and contacts to draw upon.

In fairness though, she's not expected to report on anything meaningful. As I understand it, she will only report on the 'making a difference' segments at the end of Nightly News and Rock Center. Jenna Bush Hager (the clue is in 'Bush') has a simlar role on the Today show. It hardly needs a qualified war correspondent to do that job.

Moira Stuart was not a journalist, nor qualified as one, she was an actress I believe.

But she turned into a bloody good newsreader who would put a lot of the current crop of cuties to shame.

Well, I suppose she stands a good chance of being a better broadcast journalist than her father's former aide, James Rubin!

LOL. At the risk of thread creep, I quite liked Rubin on Sky News towards the end. As for Chelsea, still don't get it.

I used to be a welder many moons ago. Does it qualify me to be NBCs Industrial Correspondent?

Probably, yes...........

The point is it's her potential pull with viewers which has got her the job.
